Looking to my eye like 2013-14  have the dubious honour of being the wettest winter ever by 28 February, and the fourth - or maybe 3rd wettest season ever.  Autumn 2000 looks to reamin the benchmark for that!

Well for the south-east England region it is probably already the wettest winter on record.

The previous record was 390.2mm in 1914/15

The stats for this winter are as follows:

Dec 138.7mm
Jan 181mm
Feb 64mm (to the 11th)

Total 383.7mm (to 11 Feb)

So we were only 7mm short of the record as at the 11th. Most parts of SE England had at least 10mm of rain yesterday so we should have already exceeded the record even before tomorrow's rain.

Interesting point there - But it's well worth waiting and going for the all time E & W record - and I think we'll get that OK.

Thanks for the stats Kev. Very much enjoying these regular updates.

It's looking like the wettest winter on record is going to be smashed rather than just pipped by a couple of mm!

The wettest February isn't entirely out of the question but the next couple of weeks would have to continue very unsettled which I seriously hope isn't the case.

About 388.9mm has been recorded in the last 9 weeks.

That's about 6.2mm per day.

On the verge of overtaking 94/95.... Don't recall that winter as being extremely wet though which is odd given I was at uni at the time and had to walk a mile between house and campus each day - clearly was too pissed most of the time to realise it was pissing down on me!.

1994/95 was certainly a pretty wet winter here as far as I recall, although there were more instances of snow and frost that winter in my area than has been the case this time. I recall the weekend of Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th December 1994 very well as a slow miving atlantic weather front got stuck over Scotland that weekend and delivered copious amounts of rain in the west; there was quite a lot of flooding not far from where I live.

The summer that followed wasn't bad though!

It is climbing the February table pretty swiftly. Even just another 25mm for the rest of the month, which is not a lot in context of this winter, it will be well up there in the top 15 wettest Februaries.

Surely we are not going to have another top 10 month?!

Although even if it does get to the top there are quite a few similarly wet Winters, so not "unprecedented" at all.

If it gets to the top of the list of wet winters it WILL be unprecedented in terms of wet winters

Because that's what the defintion of unprecedented is

Assuming there was no weather before 1850 or whenever.

I was reading about the wettest 3 month period in E+W history, which is apparently Nov 1929 to Jan 1930 at 812mm - can't quite believe it's that high but as we climb past the winter record (as we surely will) and to the season record (which is probably safe), the wettest 3 month period would be the next to compare ourselves to, and show how 'unprecedented' this period is.

Otoh, would we expect the record rainfall for different period to be the same? And is it a fair comparision?  I would guess that the potential maximum rainfall in autumn might well be higher than for winter given the air is warmer then and thus hold more moisture.

Too high. That period was 500mm.

The wettest 3 month period is October to December 2000 with 512.3mm

It's not just southern Engalnd braking records.

Down here in the south of France Nice has apparently reported a record 550mm of rain so far this winter. That's around 22 inches!
