Amazingly, we had very little rain from ex-Hurricane Ophelia during yesterday once the weather system which was ahead of that cleared away. The NHC over in America who take precedence over our own UK Met Office in these types of events, did say that it would be the wind rather than the rain which would be the main problem with that rain being mostly confined to areas which lie to the north and west of the actual path of that system and I suppose, that was what proved to be correct.
However, just as it looked as though everything was settling down nicely after that storm's departure, along came another band of showers which came down from the north during last night, and which delivered a further 1.2 mm of rain to Edinburgh Gogarbank along with another 1.6 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. That in turn, takes yesterday's final totals to 1.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. On top of that, there has been some further showery rain during this morning which as at 7am, has delivered another 1.0 mm of rain to Edinburgh Gogarbank. Amazingly, nothing at all has been recorded this morning at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh according to weathercast.co.uk, but I don't believe that this data is actually correct.
The botanic gardens in Edinburgh lies less than two miles to the east of where I live, and the wind is currently coming from the east which means that any rain which falls there, is always going to heading in my direction where I live. There has been numerous occasions during this morning when I have heard the rain absolutely battering against my east-facing bedroom and living room windows which means that since the botanic gardens in Edinburgh is in the vicinity of where the wind (and therefore the rain) is being blown from, I just don't find it conceivable in any way that there could be no measurable rain at all at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, given how heavy that rain has been where I live.
Because of that, I have decided not to include the rain day data here for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as we have clearly had a rain day here in Edinburgh already and so, the fact that no measurable rain is being recorded at that site means that this does on this occasion, have an effect on the number of rain days being reported. Because of that, all of the data for this summary will be for Edinburgh Gogarbank and as at 7am this morning, the running totals taking a rain day as one where at least 1 mm of rain is recorded were as follows:
Monthly Total For October: 47.1 mm (Expected), 41.2 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days in October so far: 7.1 (Expected), 11 (Actual)
We have now had 48.8% of our average October rainfall and 85.9% of our average number of rain days in October so far, so this month is currently 12.6% drier than average according to the actual rainfall amounts, but 54.1% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.
2017 Autumn Total: 105.1 mm (Expected), 99.4 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days so far this autumn: 17.5 (Expected), 27 (Actual)
We have had 46.0% of our average autumn rainfall so far and 74.6% of our average number of rain days for this autumn so far, so this autumn is currently 5.5% drier than average according to the actual rainfall totals, but 53.9% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.
2017 Yearly Total: 579.6 mm (Expected), 605.6 mm (Actual)
We have had 80.3% of our average annual rainfall so far, so this year is currently 4.5% wetter than average.
