Still nothing to report in terms of rainfall as we continue to be stuck on that same total of 48.4 mm for Edinburgh Gogarbank which I reported a couple of days ago, as an already slightly drier than average month so far in this part of the world has just got even drier. There was a bit light rain this morning, but even that was only just enough to wet the ground and no more, and wasn't enough for anything to be recorded at either of my two local stations. Indeed, even Gavin P. has admitted in this afternoon's video that this could end up being a very dry end to the month if the models are right, which is exactly what I said myself on this thread just a day or so ago.

At the moment, there is still just over a week to go until the end of the month and yet with the current model output as it is, I am already wondering what the odds would now be of that monthly total which i have just given, now being the actual final total for this month at that site (Edinburgh Gogarbank). On the face of it, that should be very highly unlikely since a week is a long time in terms of our weather, and we would need to be going through one heck of a long dry spell between now and the end of the month in order for that to actually end up happening.

Given the latest model output though, it still wouldn't surprise me if we were already not all that far short of our final total for this month in this part of the world.

Last night, there was 0.2 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 0.2 mm of rain at the botanic Gardens in Edinburgh from a band of showery rain which moved through from the NW during the evening. This morning, there has been another 0.2 mm of rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh along with another 0.2 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank. To be honest, those sorts of totals are barely worth reporting at all, as they only bring this month's total to 48.8 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank with very little change as well, in the monthly total for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That just serves to emphasise what I said yesterday that we might actually already be close to our final total for this month in this part of the world and for that reason, there is no point in me giving my usual current totals summary here with such small amounts of rain being reported. The model output is for a very dry outlook overall for the rest of this month and whilst we might struggle up to a monthly total of 50 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank, I will be surprised if we get much more than that if we even manage to get that at all (there is a real possibility with the way that things are going, that we might not even make it to that magic 50 mm mark at Edinburgh Gogarbank this month). This in turn, shows the real struggle which we are having just now, to get any sort of rainfall totals in this part of the world.

After that warm, dry spell last weekend, the rain is back in all its former glory around here. Recent rainfall totals:

Thu: 17.0mm
Fri: 3.7mm
Sat: 27.6mm (new October record)
Sun: 5.2mm
Mon: 1.4mm

That brings October's grand total up to 118.0mm to the end of the 23rd. I also point out that the total rainfall since September 1 is 278.3mm (set against the whole autumn average of 245.5mm) meaning that even if there is absolutely no rain whatsoever between now and November 30, this will be a wetter than average autumn.

Since my last report, a further 0.8 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this morning with a further 0.8 mm falling at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, and that now takes today's total for both sites to 1.0 mm. That only just makes today an official rain day and no more, but the fact that today is an official rain day means that I can now give the current running totals which for Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 1pm this afternoon and taking a rain day to be one where at least 1 mm of rain has fallen, are as follows:

Monthly Total For October: 64.2 mm (Expected), 49.6 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days in October so far: 9.7 (Expected), 14 (Actual)

We have now had 58.7% of our average October rainfall and 109.4% of our average number of rain days in October so far, so this month is currently 22.7% drier than average according to the actual rainfall amounts, but 44.0% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

2017 Autumn Total: 122.2 mm (Expected), 107.8 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days so far this autumn: 20.1 (Expected), 30 (Actual)

We have had 49.9% of our average autumn rainfall so far and 82.9% of our average number of rain days for this autumn so far, so this autumn is currently 11.8% drier than average according to the actual rainfall totals, but 49.1% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.

2017 Yearly Total: 596.7 mm (Expected), 614.0 mm (Actual)

We have had 81.4% of our average annual rainfall so far, so this year is currently 2.9% wetter than average.

As you will see above, we have still not yet reached the 50 mm mark for this month's rainfall total at Edinburgh Gogarbank. The latest forecasts suggest that we could get a little bit of rain during tonight, though not all that much. The next few days after that are then forecast to be mainly dry. As we head into the weekend, a cold front could just brush NE Scotland but apart from that, high pressure looks set to build just to the SW which is likely to block off the Atlantic and keep things mainly dry.

A lot therefore, rides on how much rain we get tonight if anything at all. We only need to get another 0.4 mm of rain to get over that 50 mm mark at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and that may well happen tonight, although that will probably only just happen and no more if that happens at all. If that doesn't happen though and if we don't get at least 0.4 mm of rain tonight, there is then a real chance that we could then fail to go over that 50 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank this month, given the very dry outlook which the forecasts are suggesting.

Having said that, forecasts can be wrong and often are wrong, but even if we do go over that 50 mm mark at Edinburgh Gogarbank, the fact that we have still only had not much more than half of our average October rainfall with just a week to go and with time quickly running out as far as this month is concerned, means that barring a very unexpected and really massive deluge in that last week, it is now looking very likely now, that this month will go down in the final statistics as being drier than average here in Edinburgh and possibly even significantly so if the latest forecasts end up being correct.

Yesterday, I posted on the fact that a lot was riding on what happened last night in terms of whether or not, we would have more than 50 mm of rain during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank. I have to say though that weather gods have failed really miserably on this front. To imagine what trying to get at least 50 mm of rain at that site this month, I only need to think of a situation where my football team (which could be any team in this case, and not necessarily the team that I actually support in real life) is playing against a team which they haven't managed to beat for at least 20-odd attempts. It is often said that the longer that you go without beating such opposition, the harder that it can actually be to do so due to the various psychological barriers and mental blocks which increasingly get in the way of that.

On this occasion though, I can imagine that the scenario here is that my team are in a situation where they will never have a better chance to end that long run without a win than on this occasion. Here, the other team play very poorly and my team manage to be a couple of goals up against them with just a few minutes to go. In this situation, it seems that there is no way on Earth that this long run without a win couldn't be ended . Yet my team's defence completely mess everything up in those last few minutes and the end result of this is that my team concede a couple of goals in those couple of minutes. The result of this is that the game ends up as a draw with the main media headlines pointing out the fact that my team just cannot beat that other team with what happened on this occasion being the ultimate, conclusive evidence of that.

That sounds like a really amazing scenario and yet, that is what the process of trying to get 50 mm of rain during this month at Edinburgh Gogarbank has become like. Going into last night, we only needed another 0.4 mm of rain in order to reach that 50 mm mark. Everything then started to set itself up so that it would then appear as though we could not possibly fail to get that amount of rain. There was a lot of rain to the west and south of us which appeared to be heading in this direction as was shown when I was watching Scotland's women's football team on BBC Alba (they were playing in World Cup Qualifying match) and noticed that some really heavy rain had set in there.

According to the rain radar map, there was some heavy rain just about 5 miles to the south of here, and we were even under some light rain at times, although this was never at any time, enough to even wet the ground. In that situation, I was left wondering what on Earth could possibly go wrong and yet, that rain just didn't get any further north than that and actually cleared away southwards again as we got to midnight. As I said before, we only needed another 0.4 mm of rain to get over that 50 mm mark for this month and if that that rain band had just come about 5 miles or so further north, I'm in no doubt that this would have happened without any problems.

Yet, that rain band just wouldn't push itself any further north and the end result of this was that no rain at all was recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank or the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. That in turn, has to be the most conclusive proof of all, that we just cannot get over that 50 mm mark at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this month as that monthly total remains resolutely and firmly stuck on 49.6 mm, and given the latest forecasts for the rest of this month, I am really struggling to see where that other 0.4 mm of rain is actually going to come from, even though there are still six days left of this month. We might get a bit of a northerly wind towards the end of the month which would actually be great for me as I would much rather be getting some colder weather than just doing nothing more than posting high rainfall totals on this thread, but that sort of wind direction just isn't very good for delivering any showery activity to this part of the world due to us being sheltered from the hills over on the Fife side, and that just makes it even less likely that we will get any further rainfall.

It is therefore, really extraordinary how this has happened, especially when you consider that even 50 mm of rain over an entire month still isn't very much when you consider that the 1981-2010 October average for Edinburgh Gogarbank is actually 84.5 mm. 50 mm of rain during this month is therefore not too much to ask for and so, the fact that we can't even get that shows that we can safely say now that this is going to go down as a very dry month indeed in this part of the world. Yet, members such as Bolty will continue to come onto this thread to report their very high rainfall totals as they are perfectly entitled to do if that is what is actually happening in their part of the world. I know that Bolty lives in what on average, is a wetter location than where I live but even with that, the sheer differences in the amount of rainfall at these two locations just now is nothing more than absolutely ridiculous at the moment.

it is often said that Mother Nature will balance everything out in the end. Yet, that clearly doesn't seem to be happening just now and if anything, the discrepancies in the rainfall totals between the driest and wettest parts of the UK just seem to be getting even bigger at the moment and that to me, just doesn't seem fair.
