How times have changed where a week of 30C+ maxima culminating in two 35C+ days is now just a normal heatwave :)

Heatwaves are the new "dumping of snow". Where the individual model operational runs that are most extreme are king and the ensembles become marginalised. 😊

FAX - LP scooting past N Scotland today. Then the Azores High noses in towards the SW, 1030mb Cornwall at the weekend, withdrawing somewhat on Mon 6th. Its position generates westerlies for England, warm, not really a heatwave; fronts continue to pester Scotland.

GFS Op 0z - the Azores high returns and drifts across to the N Sea 1020mb Fri 10th introducing hotter air from the south but also shallow low pressure from France into England 1010mb Sat 11th (thundery?), Then the HP returns in the shape of a ridge across Scotland , W-lies for the north (cool) and E-lies in the south (hot) before the HP retires to mid-Atlantic and sweeps all the heat away with a N-ly Sat 18th.

ECM to T +240 - like GFS, though not so much of a S-ly on Fri 10th, more of a gentle creep of hot air from the continent into the south

AIFS - London, maxima rising fairly steadily to 34C Sat 11th before dropping back to 25C from Tue 14th. Rain on Mon 13th. else dry. Edinburgh, maxima in upper teens except for a burst of warmth Thu/Fri 9th/10th at 25C, rain for a couple of days around Mon 6th and again Mon 13th.

GEFS - a general rise in mean temp  from Tue 7th to 6C above norm (a full week in S but only 4 or 5 days in N), dropping back to norm by 18th by which time ens agreement is poor. Chance of a little rain in the S around Tue 14th, chance of rain at any time in N.

I'm away for a week from tomorrow; chart reviews will depend on connectivity in mid-Wales and the time table of where I'm staying. They may be abbreviated, late or even missing.

Still a notable number that show no heatwave as such. More runs needed, as we say

This morning's ECM run is very nice to look at. Getting quite 1995 by 240hrs. That's what we've been lacking, proper anticyclonic weather centred on the North of Britain. Temps hovering around 30. More of that please.

I'd echo the thoughts on this morning's ECM op ... It has a very 2018 look to it for England where you could basically plan a BBQ a week out because you consistently knew that it would be around 26-29C.  Perfect imv, albeit not great for the gardens.

It's sometimes difficult to read this thread. 🤭 To me, it looks like we're heading for an amazing period of summer weather in southern Britain, with things remaining more mixed further north. Temperatures have been trimmed, but I'd say we'll top out at 30C to 34C in the next week, before possibly climbing a bit higher between 9 and 11 July. Potentially a classic spell for us in the south where you can plan a number of days ahead, even if it's not record-breaking in terms of absolute values.

One note of caution though: there is still a huge amount of scatter on the ensembles. As early as Monday the spread of 2m temps goes from 19C to 33C in London.

Back up to 16 runs plus the op run on the 6Z GEFS that hit 20C at 850mb in London. There's quite a lot of variation in when they do it, too - some as early as Wednesday, some not until 7 or 8 days later.

Top temps next week way closer to old school heatwave values, as has been strongly indicated up until & including today’s output.

None of the high 30’s silliness. Hopefully no ghastly coastal winds next week.

Question is, at what point does heatwave threshold warrant its own thread? Not sure it does this time.

I'm liking how the high is being shown to position on the recent output - over the northern half of the UK, bringing warm but not stupidly hot temps.

Off track, i just wanted to say that some years ago, I remember bbc weather people discussing about the Azores high stubbornly stuck and moving in the uk's direction. It seemed to go on and on like this for a few summers. I maybe wrong, but I'm sure the uk struggled to get a period of some decent summers.

I probably saw these summers in an alternate universe where they also produced and played decent music... apologies for off topic.

Joining the ranks of the nearly 50s although I have to wait until next year. In the summer of 1995 I was 18 and just finished my first year of university. A cracking summer all round.

GFS 12Z is still very keen on cranking up the heat to the mid 30s by the end of next week. Another solid 10 days of 30C+, which is considerably higher than most other output.

Having said that today has easily reached 27C across the SE and I am fairly sure there has been a 28 somewhere. GFS went for 27 while UKV went no higher than a Grinch-like 25C.

That GFS run would surely absolutely demolish the CET monthly record, we'd be way over 20C by the 17th.

Ends with 40c plus lol
