If we get a direct hit from the heat dome I think the record will go next week.  GFS is a direct hit , GEM and AIFS 0z slightly flatter so "only" mid 30s.

Imagine December 81, Jan 87 and Feb 91 all bundled into one winter. It's looking like May, June and July 2026 could do exactly that for heat. đŸ˜‚đŸ˜‚đŸ˜‚â˜€ïž

FAX - A couple of depressions blowing in from the Atlantic and decaying over Britain, tomorrow (Tue) 1016mb N Ireland and Thu 2nd 1001mb Hebrides, before high pressure 1034mb some distance SW of Ireland sends a ridge across Britain on Fri 3rd.

GFS Op 0z - the centre of the high pressure from the 3rd slowly transfers to Germany Tue 7th but a potential warm southerly is soon dispelled as a depression scoots past NW Scotland turning winds back to the SW. New centre of high pressure soon appears from the SW and settles over Britain 1030mb from Sun 12th - looks like lots of hot sunshine but not too humid as the circulation is Atlantic in origin.

ECM to T+240 - like GFS/FAX but the high pressure moves across Britain more slowly and has only reached East Anglia Wed 8th with a trough from Biscay threatening the SW.

AIFS - London maxima rising slowly from 23C now to low 30s C by Tue 7th for a couple of days; back to 25C Fri 10th. Dry, just a splash on Fri 10th (=a long way off).  Edinburgh, mostly around 20C with a few isolated warmer days to 24C (Mon 6th, Wed 8th, Mon 13th). Rain in the next few days and then again on Fri 10th.

GEFS - mean temp rising from norm now to 3 or 4C above norm (a couple of degrees more along the S coast; less marked in Scotland) Tue 7th- Thu 9th, with quite good ens support before an ens spread sets in (Scotland, ens spread from the word 'go') and the mean drops back. No rain in the S, not much in the rest of England, bits and pieces in Scotland except dry 7th-9th.

Something of a heat wave in the south early next week, but a lukewarm(?) copy of what we've just had.

My take is the ens outlook still looks super messy.  Some warm uppers but the ECM 12z op was definitely towards the top of the pack.

I think there's growing confidence week 2 of July is looking warmer, but I think we could be a way off getting a repeat of what we've just experienced.

That said, with high 20s, it would be really, really pleasant.

Obviously I'm looking for some heat up here, 25 C is fine and if we could get 3 days of that to give us our first heatwave since 2022, I'd be happy

Looking at the big 3 00z's, Eastern Scotland remains with the Atlantic westerly for the first 10 days of July, so changeable and around 20 - 23 C at most

Looking at the GFS though, there does seem to be a build of heat northwards towards mid month đŸ€ž

ECM extended 00z looks like a standard heatwave rather than extreme. the block doesnt drag up those reds and then drifts west back and forth.  I could live with that.

A relatively chilly GFS run, only maxing out at 39C.

Edit: actually on the third 39C day it looks like there is a 40C isotherm. Oh well... :)

So just the one 40C+ day, six 35C+ and twelve 30C+ days on that run.

I think its clear that for these extreme heat scenarios the usual rule of 'find the highest possible pixel of heat and that will probably be the max recorded at the hottest station' is a little out. Both now and in 2022 the temperatures predicted were excessive, and although in both cases there was downward adjustment even in the short term they exaggerated the highs.

In 2022 the GFS ensembles had something like a 50% chance of 41C being achieved 1-2 days before the actual event, in the end we were about a degree lower than that; some of the more extreme forecasts went far above 42C with the most extreme one showing 46C.

We currently have forecasts showing 40C again, thankfully I think unless we get a big majority of ensembles showing this at short range its probably quite unlikely.

I very much hope so. Still not fully recovered from sleepless nights in the week just gone.

I notice one day in about a week's time, a mid 30s temperature with a 6C dewpoint. Keep hydrated then it might be possible to cool off.

GEFS 6Z now up to 16 members with 20C at 850mb in London. At least three of them go for 41C...

Another consistently hot run from GFS 12Z with at least 12 days of low to mid 30s albeit without the crazy 40Cs this time. Still a marked north south split though with the heat not really making it to northern parts except a couple of brief wafts.
