Looking at the WeatherObs map right now it's amazing to see almost the whole USA subzero. Temps of -6C and lower right on the Gulf coast.

It is, of course, galling to see places like that have more snow on the ground than we've had here this millennium! Hell, there are people buying houses and raising children who've never seen that much.

All that cold air bodes ill for us, as it'll just keep the jet revved up.

If you wanted some proof of a bias in the mainstream media towards weather events having to be being global warming related. Just look at the lack of reporting of the record-breaking cold and the deep snow has fallen across Southern Louisiana and Florida... Hardly a mention on the BBC, shock! Had this has been some record warmth somewhere they would have been all over another global warming blah blah blah story.

Nearly a foot of snow falling right on the Gulf coast next to water that's currently around 20C that sits at latitude not far off the tropics.. Now that is what I'd call truly spectacular weather.

We stayed in Mission Beach one year and the nearby town of Tully has the golden gumboot in the centre,. It is 8 metres high and the claimed record rainfall for a year for any town in Australia. This is pretty close to Innisfail, which is one of the towns affected now.

It's an area with interesting topography in that the mountains (well over 1000m and up to 1600m) are very close to the coast along this stretch so the tropical lows just circle around for days on end like this system is.

Incredible rainfall totals as expected in Queensland now.

Ingham Aerodrome is up to 1040mm in the last 3 days with 5 hours to go until the 9:00am cutover, today is already at pretty much 400mm.

In the last 2 hours, the rate has slowed to 30mm/hr, with the 2 hours preceding that at 50mm/hr.

Just noticed on the 31st January it reached 24 C at the Falkland Islands while Riyadh managed 18 C.

Like I said in an earlier post, I know they are at opposite ends of the globe each with their own particular climate type and season but it's something that interests me.

BBC Radio 4 saying that a cat 5 cyclone is about to hit N Queensland but there doesn't appear to be a link yet.

Apparently that area has been experiencing an unusual sequence of tropical LPs with potential development

EDIT - correction - it's western Australia that's being hit🫢

Some potentially record breaking cold temps forecast for parts of the northern and central States.

And if the longer term forecasts pove to be in anyway correct, this could be followed by some record breaking warmth.

"may you have interesting weather" - a variation on the apocryphal Chinese curse!

At least 10 people have died as torrential downpours over the weekend drenched parts of the south-eastern US, submerging roads and houses. The same areas could now be affected by drier but colder conditions, and the risk of snow, ice and significant disruption - according to BBC forecaster John Hutchinson.

India postponed its national winter games on Monday citing a lack of snow in the northern Kashmir territory's ski resort of Gulmarg, where the event was to be held this month. Around 300 athletes were expected to compete in four snow sports - ski mountaineering, alpine skiing, snowboard, and Nordic skiing - in the games, which had been due to be held from February 22 to 25. "We have decided to postpone the event as key ski slopes lack sufficient snow," Rauf Tramboo, president of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir, told Reuters. The slopes normally get seven to eight feet (about 2 meters) of snowfall.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/india-postpones-winter-games-in-kashmir-citing-insufficient-snowfall/ar-AA1zcA87

There was a similar lack of snow last year with consequences for tourism and for summer irrigation.

Deep cold arrived but seem too dry for Cyprus at the moment, no snow and already -9.2C at the top, never that low without snow cover before and they expecting to reach -13C by morning.

Read that there will be some locailsed snowfalls anywhere from the coast to inland areas that very rarely get it so let see this otherwise will be a bust and big opportunity missed to match 5th Feb 1950 coldest day that brought 1 and half foot of snow outside Nicosia area, and snow covered in the centre of Nicosia.
