I thought the lowest all time maximum is -19C at Braemar in 1982.   🙂

It's just a shame that this doesn't tend to be the case when it comes to low temperature records these days, probably due to ongoing climate change.

Having reached the giddy heights of 1.0C here (7C below average), temperatures are already falling back, currently down to 0.5C and falling steadily. Hopefully that means temperatures will be falling over the snowfields of Scotland too, and given that we saw -14C this morning... perhaps we may end up with that -20 tonight.

EDIT: It was 0.6 when I clicked the reply button, 0.5 when I checked again while writing, and 0.4 by the time I finished it!

Looks like quite a few places across the southern Midlands have recorded an ice day today. Didn't quite manage it down here with the temperature creeping up to 1.1C.

GFS had a max of 3, MetO 2, both have a slight frost tonight (-3 and -1 respectively). TBH if it stays clear and calm I can't see why it wouldn't be a bit lower than that!

Further north the MetO raw has -17 for Aviemore tonight, with Kinbrace and Altnaharra showing -15. The text forecast for Highland mentions a low of -12, which seems a bit off, considering it's already -12 as you mention!

Not 100% sure if my sensor is affected by the sun but even in the sunshine it maxed at 1.8c and is now down to -0.7c and dropping steadily. It wasn't until gone 18:30 it went below zero yesterday, hopefully a sign it'll be a colder one IMBY.

As for double figure negatives, I bet you would have seen them in 1987. And if I could get -14.8 back in 2018, I'm sure you'd be able to as well - I still remember that morning, checking the Met Office automated, and seeing -12. I laughed, but it ended up even colder!

You're colder than here now, it's -2.0. For whatever reason the rapid fall has slowed right down, even though skies are clear and there's no wind. Odd how that happens.

We're still dropping for the time being, -3.1c now.

(I'd recommend that site to all on here btw, it's great for historical observations. It doesn't have all the stations, mind you, Brogdale near Faversham - which reached -14.2 back in 2018, the UK's lowest temperature that winter, doesn't appear on the list.)

I seem to remember February 2021 being the last spell to record –20°C somewhere in the UK. Given the current temperature in Altnaharra, I think tonight also has a very good chance.

My guess would maybe be –22°C by morning there?

Altnaharra's 1800Z SYNOP reported a max of -9.4C, but that was the max from 0600 to 1800. The highest hourly reading after 9am was -11.2C so it probably stayed below -10C all day, and should do until 9am tomorrow.

I would imagine that this would be very rare indeed here in the UK, especially away from the highest Scottish mountains and is probably becoming even rarer all the time due to climate change.
