I believe the -19C was the highest daytime temperature that afternoon before it started to fall again in the evening. The temperature then bottomed out before rising later during the following night and the 24-hour 09-09 maximum was actually -9.9C on 11th January, after the record -27.2 on the 10th.

If we were talking about high temperatures here rather than low temperatures, at least somewhere in the UK would no doubt have broken an all time record for that by now as is so often the case these days.

It's just a shame that this doesn't tend to be the case when it comes to low temperature records these days, probably due to ongoing climate change.

Kinbrace is now marginally colder than Altnaharra, -11.5C at 2pm compared to -11.2C at Altnaharra.

I would expect the temperature to start dropping again soon. Conditions appear dead calm there now.

Only half an hour till sunset in northern Scotland. Kinbrace had dipped back to -12C at 3pm after reaching -11.5C at 2pm. Altnaharra also dipped to -12C again.

Looks like quite a few places across the southern Midlands have recorded an ice day today. Didn't quite manage it down here with the temperature creeping up to 1.1C.

It was surprisingly cold here as a max: 1.0, with all of 2 hours and 20 minutes above freezing, it's now -0.6 and the sun's shining still - quite unusual. I suspect at ground level, certainly in the shade, it remained below zero all day - the frost hasn't even tried to melt on the lawn. GFS had a max of 3, MetO 2, both have a slight frost tonight (-3 and -1 respectively). TBH if it stays clear and calm I can't see why it wouldn't be a bit lower than that!

Further north the MetO raw has -17 for Aviemore tonight, with Kinbrace and Altnaharra showing -15. The text forecast for Highland mentions a low of -12, which seems a bit off, considering it's already -12 as you mention!

I think that station is one run by Highlandweather - he said he sited it in an area even more prone to frost than the Met Office station which was reading -14.2C at 4pm.

It's already down to -1.6 here, and it didn't get that low until half two this morning. Given how slowly temperatures normally fall around here, it's going down like a stone! Question is, where will it end up levelling off...

Pffft when I was a lad and wanted to warm up I used to set our chest freezer to -20c and climb in wearing nothing but a loin cloth.

(But yes, that's impressively cold for so early, don't think I've ever hit negative double digits down here, let alone colder).

That made me laugh out loud! And it brings to mind stories of people getting stuck to frozen things such as freezers, or hand rails...

As for double figure negatives, I bet you would have seen them in 1987. And if I could get -14.8 back in 2018, I'm sure you'd be able to as well - I still remember that morning, checking the Met Office automated, and seeing -12. I laughed, but it ended up even colder!

You're colder than here now, it's -2.0. For whatever reason the rapid fall has slowed right down, even though skies are clear and there's no wind. Odd how that happens.

For some reason I've got it in mind I bottomed out around -9c in 2018, although don't have any records from then. (I do remember walking my daughter to school and layering up and still being cold, which is rather unusual for me as I run fairly warm). 

We're still dropping for the time being, -3.1c now.  

Sounds about right, looking at the records. MetO has Kenley as your nearest station, and that reached -9.5.

(I'd recommend that site to all on here btw, it's great for historical observations. It doesn't have all the stations, mind you, Brogdale near Faversham - which reached -14.2 back in 2018, the UK's lowest temperature that winter, doesn't appear on the list.)

We know that an ice day is a day in which the official maximum temperature is below freezing so if that maximum temperature is in minus double figures, could we possibly then refer to that as a double ice day?

I would imagine that this would be very rare indeed here in the UK, especially away from the highest Scottish mountains and is probably becoming even rarer all the time due to climate change.
