With a max of -9.6°C in Altnaharra yesterday it was the coldest January day in 43 years (since 1982).

The official minimum last night was -18.9°C again in Altnaharra.

and this morning’s 0900 had a max from 2100 to 0900 of -16.5C so it certainly wasn’t beaten after 9pm.

Also because of the vagaries of the 9am-9am reporting system Altnaharra will also have another sub -18C min tomorrow. It’s still -18.2 at 10am there.

I would guess they are referring to “day” as in the 24 hour period rather than the climate analysis 9am to 9pm period for the value. I think what you state will be recorded as the official maximum but for “coldest day” purposes (non-scientific) they have probably just used the calendar day. Either way it meets the criteria.

It's just the 24-hour 09-09 maximum taken directly from the synops is -10.8C. The 06-18 maximum yesterday was -9.4C but it's not clear when that was recorded.

Edit- totally missed the posts above!

Coldest night here so far this winter, -4.3C. Promised more having reached that temperature by midnight but transient rises and falls during the night lifted it somewhat before it dropped again to that value as late as 8.30 am. Sunny since dawn so -1.1C at 11.00 am. Won't make an ice day but will probably be sub zero for about 35 out of 36 hrs maybe more, we will see.

My station recorded a low of -6.6 last night. Definitely the lowest reading for a few years.

Went down to -6.2C and grass min was -11.2C while conservatory was -3.1 with frost outside and some inside the windows and outside ice crystals on my new windows again.  If was have snow cover and no shallow fog I would had easily get to -15C and below -20C on the snow surface, so one day will happen at some point.

Ended up with -4.1c. Cold but not as cold as last year's spell and a bit disappointing given the late afternoon/early evening position.

Stunning day though, now just above freezing in sparkling sunshine with ice crystals on the refrozen snow.

I think it will be much milder overnight though so there wouldn’t have been a chance of a record anyway.

After reaching -13.9 last night, we have only just gone above -10C at 1330. Pretty impressive as we are not in areas that would normally hit these kind of lows . Funny old thing, no yellow warning for extreme low temperatures in this region .

There are, however, warnings for extreme heat - but they've only been around since 2021:

Patchy Freezing fog/mist -6C. 🥶🥶

It's actually turned out to be a decent cold spell temperature wise.

-6C with freezing fog is rare here, nice to actually get a few proper winter days/nights.

Pity this is the last night of the cold spell.

-2.7c for me although quite a few of the local stations were lower. Judging by their locations they were lower down, so presumably benefited from cold air pooling.
