Rostherne, not too far from me (but very rural) recorded -8.8

The 9am to 9am max was -10.8C, wasn’t it? That’s what the 2100 reading yesterday said.

and this morning’s 0900 had a max from 2100 to 0900 of -16.5C so it certainly wasn’t beaten after 9pm. 

Also because of the vagaries of the 9am-9am reporting system Altnaharra will also have another sub -18C min tomorrow. It’s still -18.2 at 10am there. 

Calendar day doesn’t work either as it was only -3.7C at 2am yesterday. 

neither is it the 6am - 6am reading as that max was -9.4C. 

is that figure from the Met Office?

It’s what the BBC stated but I have no idea where they got the figure from (as I can only see the -10.8°C max value). The Met Office have the -10.8°C value.

Can I ask where you saw that information about the maximum temperature at Altnaharra?

It's just the 24-hour 09-09 maximum taken directly from the synops is -10.8C. The 06-18 maximum yesterday was -9.4C but it's not clear when that was recorded.

After all of the highest ever recorded temperatures which we have seen in recent times, it would be nice to get a lowest ever temperature record for a change.

I don't know if that will actually end up happening though.

Stunning day though, now just above freezing in sparkling sunshine with ice crystals on the refrozen snow.

It rose to a toasty -13.4C at midday but fell back to -14.4C at 1pm. 

I think it will be much milder overnight though so there wouldn’t have been a chance of a record anyway. 

There's a reason for that... no provision for cold warnings. Ice and/or snow is as close as you'll get!

It's actually turned out to be a decent cold spell temperature wise. 

-6C with freezing fog is rare here, nice to actually get a few proper winter days/nights.

Pity this is the last night of the cold spell.

It was one of those occasions where the further east you went, the colder it got! It bottomed out at -3.8 here, the coldest of the cold spell so far and par for the course when there's no snow around.
