I am incensed by how utterly worthless diabolical and totally useless this "cold spell" is. Absolutely dire 🤢

Just another week of horrible, depressing, uninteresting, unpleasant toxic rubbish. It's absolutely laughable that a severe weather warning has been issued for this degenerate pigswill. Truly desperate times if this is what now passes for severe weather.

Pig sick of the clueless joke of an organisation that is the Met Office, constantly issuing severe weather warnings when we are living in an era in which severe weather occurs with a lower frequency than any other in modern times. So infrequent as to be almost non-existent 😴

Looks like January is going to be a complete deadloss yet again. Not only devoid of any severe weather but devoid of even the barest minimum of a snowfall that would have been expected in a mild January in the past 🙄

Pitiful unmeasurable covering this morning festering under a rotten gloomy grey sky following a poisonous mix of rain, wet snow, sleet, hail and drizzle overnight. No proper snow whatsoever. How the hell can Truro get 5cm and we end up with this stinking rancid crap?

Such weather would never have received any coverage in the news before yet that is pretty much all we get in January now. The thinnest of coverings that are so tediously pointless we may as well have had nothing at all. The formerly snowiest month of the year now is less snowy than November and April.

Just 3 Januaries in 19 years here that have reached the 5cm depth seen in Truro this week. A car crash statistic that is beyond the bounds of credulity. Few of those Januaries have been particularly mild but it makes no difference. 2021 was one of the coldest on record and it was still the same pointless embarrassingly inadequate rubbish. Couldn't even equal the 1 inch depth seen during January 1974, one of the mildest on record.

There is nothing that can explain what a shocking month January has become and this has been undoubtedly one of the worst. Horrible every single day. No proper mild, no proper cold, no proper snow. Just disgusting wind, cold and rain and amongst the lowest temperature range on record 💩

The very mild weather experienced this time last year was far preferable to this ugly unappealing grot.

No snow here, meanwhile Marham in Norfolk recorded 948cm of snow at 6am this morning. It's on the SYNOP report so it must be true.

It's looking like a classic week of winter anticyclonic gloom here. Stuck around 3-5°C by day, but cloud not allowing any frost overnight. It's always annoying when the pressure gets up to 1037mb and it's just grey and miserable.

What an absolutely disgusting despicably poor horror show of a winter 🤯

Just day after day of gut-wrenchingly awful garbage that just gets worse and worse week after rotten lousy depressing week.

Detestable crap like nothing on earth we ever used to get. The only way we can get anything like normal diurnal ranges of at least 5C is if much milder air moves in during the day like 18th December or 5th January. Otherwise there is barely any difference between night and day temperatures. It's horrific.

What we are now being subjected to is the worst of the relentless poison that's been thrown at us for the past five weeks. Insulting, mind-numbing unspeakably grim and uninteresting tripe. 6C yesterday, 5C overnight and 6C today under soul destroying murky grey skies.  There is nothing worse than this putrid mild-but-feels-cold sunless rubbish for completely draining the warmth out of the house 🤬

Up to 2010 this was always the best positioned part of the country to benefit from cold spells but over the past decade we have to endure repeated nonsense of getting cold rain while Cornwall has 5cm of snow, minimum temperatures 5C warmer than Edinburgh and rank minima of +5C while the bulk of England gets -5C. There is just no rational explanation for this sort of utter 💩 occurring repeatedly.

Looks like we could go for yet another week or more without a single frost. Pretty much unheard of in the past unless under exceptional synoptics such as 1988/89 but these ridiculously lengthy frost-free periods are just becoming the norm. This is the third January out of four to have barely any frost never mind snow 💤

Can't even get the crisp frosty days that we were still getting during the 2010s as there is just no let-up in that rank wind. It just blows continuously the entirety of winter 🤮

Foehn effects are becoming rarer too. Just one day above 10C this winter and that was under a vile dull and wet southerly. It's just become an absolute disaster of a season consisting of all the most repulsive and uninteresting conditions imaginable that no one in their right mind could possibly enjoy ☹

It was a good winter up till now. Some decent frosts, blue skies and a few inches of snow for a week, albeit still only snowed once and that was at night. Now we are back to normal modern winters with HP bringing endless gloom which is no use to man or beast. +1C at night and +2C by day under thick grey cloud. And as ever with this set up it looks like it will be around for a while.

We had a winter? I must have missed it by blinking. 🤣 But today I'm just starting to see chinks of brightness for the first time after three days of gloomy grey skies.

Surprised you've had grey skies. It's been generally beautiful here for the last few days, sparkling frosty conditions. Today we have had drizzle though.

Ironically, here we've had our first actual rain in over a week.

We had some snow showers for three consecutive afternoon/evenings last week, but since then it's been dry with some long periods of sunshine.

Today reminds me how much I hate rain.

If we don't get a heavy fall of snow between now and summer, it will be 9 winters since we've had a +5cm fall (last one was Boxing Day evening 2014). The mad part is that we've probably had upwards of 20 falls of snow in that subsequent period that have stuck, but the vast majority have been between 0.5 and 2cm, with a couple 3-4cm.

It's really frustrating.

What is really P@*#ING me off just now is the consistent lack of actual "interesting" weather which just keeps on inflicting this part of the world, especially in comparison with the rest of the UK.

Indeed, that was evident even during the more "unsettled" spell earlier on this month whilst everyone else was getting a lot of rain, and the end result of this is with just six days left of this month after today, a total of just 35.2 mm of rain has been recorded for the whole of this month along with just 27.2 mm at the botanic gardens which in both cases, is less than half of our 1991-2020 January average rainfall.

Yet, it has been a lot wetter to our west and south with NE Scotland also being much being wetter than here. This means that the SE of Scotland has really been on its own just now in terms of missing out on all of that rainfall which the rest of the country has been getting. That abundance of rainfall elsewhere means that nowhere else is likely to be experiencing any potential water shortages during the coming spring and summer and so, the only part of the country which is likely to be at any risk from that will be here in SE Scotland.

Yet with no significant rainfall in the forecasts during the foreseeable future according to the latest model output, potential water shortages during the coming spring and summer looks very much on the cards for here in SE Scotland. We built up quite a big rainfall deficit during last year which was never fully made up here in SE Scotland and now, the same thing is happening yet again this year as well so given that last year's deficit was never fully made up, any water shortages which occur during this year will be much worse as a result.

Since Edinburgh lies right within SE Scotland, it should be easy to see from there, just what part of the country generally isn't getting any "interesting" weather, at least in terms of rainfall.

In addition to that, we have recently had to put up with the south of England getting all of the recent cold weather whilst our so-called winter" goes completely down the toilet pan here in Scotland with double figures winter temperatures here in Edinburgh. Since the south of England was also one of the wettest places in the UK earlier on this month, I don't ever want to hear another moan from another southerner on this forum about not getting enough rain or cold weather as that has certainly not been the case during this month.

Finally, Richard from Aberdeen often talks about the lack of extreme weather in his own part of the world but as confirmed DoctorMog from his own neck of the woods, the temperature at his own local airport got all the way up to around 16°C and if that isn't an example of an extremely mild temperature for this time of the year, then I don't know what on Earth is (the fact that this has happened is probably why Richard has been very quiet on this subject just recently).

Here in Edinburgh on the other hand, the temperature during this milder spell hasn't been above around 11°C, so I would say from this that it is Edinburgh and NOT Aberdeen, which isn't getting any extremes in temperatures, or extreme weather in general just now, thus backing up my point once again that Edinburgh just doesn't generally get "interesting" weather, especially in comparison with the rest of the UK.

Have been looking at some MetO Daily Weather Reports from the 1960s and its amazing how many times Aberdeen was swept by blizzards in a strong northerly, on one day in February 1969 Aberdeen had a midday temperature of -6c combined with Force 6 wind and heavy drifting snow.

That's a Northerly!

Encouraging signs from the GFS with high pressure hinting at building from the south. I'm off work the week of 6th February, so a nice mild and spring-like week would be lovely! Winter can do one now.

Hope not a dirty HP like today was very dirty HP with overcast skies and tad below average at 5C.  I only see going up to 10C here next week with some sunshine so hope it come off.   Heating usage will be down much further, Going to get it get it lower so not to exceed DD amount of £92 so to earn credits from Feb onward.    Heating usage this month was between 2-3 hours per day with boiler temps of 50C so now up to 27th at £103 so much lower than the corresponding last month at £125 before finished off at £149.    I am now got used to 15-16C indoor temps and still take showers in the morning without turning the heat on because we survived Cyprus winter months indoors when we live, sleep, shower , eat  at 14-16C all the time even with heating on.

Why you kept repeating it wrong all the time because once a dirty HP is in place every where effected including in the SE every time I go weekly and past experience when living there.  You being so stupid really thinking your area outcome are the same as everywhere.

We've already had 2 cold spells this winter, the December one was quite notable in terms of low minima, the January one  was really just a bog standard winter cold spell. With the evenings now noticeably lengthening, the deep, dark days of winter are behind us and even though proper springlike conditions are still several weeks away, definately in 'spring mode' now. As long as it's not too wet February can do what it likes to be honest, not that bothered about another cold spell and with the cost of living crisis and all that, who needs it, roll on spring!
