Good to know the heating's working for when it's needed, anyway!

As it is now tolerable to even contemplate a heating test I switched on the heating today and after many months of lack use and inevitable scale build-up in the valve, as per usual the two port valve on the heating circuit jammed half open and failed to operate the microswich to activate the boiler. After taking the valve cover off, and with a little gentle persuasion with a VDE screwdriver, it made the contact. A second try and it worked fine.

19 up, 17 down, much the same as the past few days here. 12C outside after an 11C low - and the wind has decreased a fair bit. If the sun appears today it should warm up quite quickly.

I have an old house with thick cob walls so indoor temp changes are slow both up and down. The ‘natural’ temperature except for winter and heatwaves is constant at around 18-19C, both upstairs (thatched roof) and down (before any solar heating takes place). We’ve decided that this winter the thermostat will be at 18C rather than 19C - interesting that others have decided 18C as well.

Set to 17°C here still and don’t think I’d change that lower even it saves money.

Yes it is 16c in here now which is unpleasant, feet are cold with socks on. Think when I get the heating working again, 17c will be the minimum, perhaps even 18c.

We arrived back home at 10.30am this morning in time for Her Majestys funeral after a 3 day surprise birthday party for my wifes Aunty who celebrated her 80th birthday at Camber Sands Holiday Park in East Sussex.

A cool 17.4c hallway temperature greeted us.

The combination of clear skies and single digit minima overnight coupled with afternoon convective infill has resulted in a huge net loss. We also kept the curtains open meaning that what was gained during the afternoon was soon lost as soon as the sunset. I'm surprised its cooled so quickly to be honest. After a very warm summer I thought there would be a little more residual warmth held in.

Sunshine coming through the west facing windows at 2pm has improved the situation to 18.5c just now but cloud has started to increase preventing the warmth building indoors. The outside temperature is around 18c, as a result there is little point opening the doors.

We've taken the decision to set the thermostat to 18c this winter. The central heating will remain off and will only be switched on when fine sunny days fail to get us to that 18c value.

19.5C in my brother house and will go back home on Thursday morning and they put 20-21C which should be full sunshine as this rotten cloudy HP move east and exiting.  If indoors are 17-18C then will open the windows to bring the 20-21C warmth inside to boost it and shutters will be closed every night.

A slight recovery. 18.5c this morning.

Some weak afternoon sunshine and the cooker raised the temperature to 19.2c from that cold arrival home temperature of 17.4c yesterday.

Was 20C this morning before i left Letchworth to back to work in Slough.  Will go home on Thursday and if cool inside then will open the windows to bring in the warmth so it a race to get warm inside before temps drop off on Friday.

Recovery continues. 19.2c this morning.

An early evening peak of 20.3c yesterday with some strong sunshine between 4 and 5pm really helping things along. Curtains closed at 7.30pm to trap it in.

Hoping to open french doors this afternoon if the outside temperature exceeds 21c.
