We go step further, DrM. Sheets of cardboard cut to size for our sash windows - slipped in behind curtains or blinds when direct sun is on them. Our house faces E-W - so we swap the across at midday. Certainly makes a difference.

It sounds like it's unpleasantly warm for most of us indoors, then! (Aside from those like Jiries who actually enjoy hot temperatures! )

Thankfully here it's been a much cooler night than forecast (which implies it'll be a LOT warmer during the day...), but for now:

24C upstairs, 25C in the dining room (windows open all night) and 21C in the living room, with the patio doors open and a fan blowing in.

16.2C outside and falling, so I should be able to get it down to 18C or so in the living room before it starts to warm up.

These are also a good way to circulate hot air from around a wood stove.
We have an ecofan runs from stove heat but they are a lot more than £6.99 (ebay price for the USB 2.5w fan currently) - and additional wafting is no bad thing on occasion .

Downstairs is rarely too warm here but upstairs can get pretty bad especially since additional insulation was installed when replacing roof in 2015.
I'm not sure how much of that is heat rising from downstairs rooms.
Once it is hot even windows wide open takes many hours to help much as internal stone walls and everything else in the room are acting like a giant storage heater.
A few days recently have been well below 10C first thing but still 22C upstairs at same time with windows fully open

That's a nice temperature. My place holds heat a bit. It's cold nights which knock it down.

I'll be waiting for downstairs to fall to 21C before the heating goes on - Today currently it's 25C in my lounge.

It's settled into a routine here.... high 20s/low 30s when I get in, upstairs, depending on how sunny it's been. Mid 20s downstairs.

Today, for example, was 28C up and 25C down. Windows are open now but it won't do much, and I'll put the portable a/c on later to cool down my bedroom.

That'll go off after I go to bed and the temperature will then rise back to say 23C or so - a bit too warm for sleeping comfortably, but cheaper than having the a/c going all night long.

Tomorrow morning it'll be around 23C upstairs still and 23C downstairs, then the cycle will repeat.

Getting away from 24C highs and 19C lows (brief!) will be a blessing. The absolute heat may have gone, but the house simply can't cool down much at the moment. I'm dying for a nice cool (let alone cold) night...

Usually take time to cool down since all the walls, stuff and flooring are warm from the summer, while in Spring it take time to warm up due to cold walls, flooring and stuff.  23-24C today indoors thanks to some sunshine before gone cloudy later.  Those mild nights also help to keep warm inside.  22.5 now before I close the shutters will stall the temperatures as usual.

The ambient temperature of the house settles back to around 22.5c to 23.5c downstairs in the mornings (as it has done since Mid July). 25-26's in heatwaves that settle back after 5 days.

I've worked out that this ambient inside temperature is approximately 3 to 4c warmer than the outside average temperature (July and August were 19.7 and 20.4 respectively).

Sub 19c is fairly uncomfortable for sitting still indoors meaning that outside average temperatures will need to fall sub 15c for that urge to click some heating on. By my reckoning that will be early October.

Light breezes and sunny days will prolong the internal warmth.
