After some of the coldest and snowiest March weather for years things will be turning milder this weekend but there's also further rain and snow to come. Next week is likely start mild, wet and windy but will soon be turning colder again with more night frost and wintry weather during the middle of the week... The delayed spring continues...

Saturday morning has been mostly dry and cold with sunny spells but in the west, rain, sleet and snow has already arrived and this afternoon and into the evening we'll see the band of rain, sleet and snow pushing eastwards. Snow is most likely through the north Midlands, northern England and Scotland this evening with an additional 2-5cm possible over high ground. Rain and sleet is more likely further south. Temperatures range from 0C to 7C. Well below average for March.

Overnight, rain, sleet and snow will push eastwards across the rest of the country. By the end of the night snow will left across Scotland but the rest of the country will be turning dry with a lot of low cloud and potentially some dense fog patches especially over snow cover. Temperatures will be cold in the north and east with icy patches on untreated roads and pavement much temperatures will be turning much milder in the west and south. Temperature range from -3C to + 10C north east to south west.

The last of the patchy snow will die out across Scotland tomorrow morning and then most places will be dry for a time but during the afternoon wet and windy weather will arrive in the west and will start to push steadily eastwards. Temperatures will be much milder at 7C to 14C with a rapid thaw of lying snow.

A deep area of low pressure will be pushing across the country on Sunday night giving spells of heavy rain and strong winds. The heavy rain, combined with the rapid snow melt could cause problems with localized in parts of Scotland and northern England. On the plus side at least it will be very mild.

Monday will start very wet and windy with heavy rain and gale force winds. Winds are likely to reach 60MPH widely with 70MPH gusts possible around coasts. Heavy rain will last for much of the day through Wales, the Midlands and northern England. In the south east the rain could be lighter and patchier at times while Northern Ireland may turn drier later. Across Scotland the rain is likely to turn back to snow as cold air starts to dig back in from the north. After a very mild start temperatures will turn colder across Scotland, falling to 0c to 3C but the rest of the country will have mild temperatures at 8C to 12C.

A cold front pushes southwards on Monday taking rain, sleet and snow with it. If the cold front gets delayed on a path southwards it's possible some parts of northern and eastern England as well as the Midlands could have a further covering of snow overnight. However the most likely scenario is the front pushes through quickly with rain and back edge sleet and snow followed by clear spells and wintry showers. Becoming colder again with frost and ice in the north.

Tuesday will be a cold and windy day with high pressure to the west and low pressure to the east. Snow showers are likely for central. northern and western regions but the east and south should stay mostly dry with sunny spells. A cold day with temperatures of 0C to 7C.

A ridge of high pressure should bring most of us a dry day on Wednesday with plenty of sunshine though by the end of the day the next area of low pressure will see rain, sleet and snow arriving across Northern Ireland, Wales and south west England. After a widespread frost Wednesday will be a cold day with temperatures of 0C to 7C.

Thursday will see the next area of low pressure moving in from the Atlantic. As the low comes in against the cold air there's likely to be another battle with rain and snow in places. A lot of uncertainty at the moment but the most likely place to get more heavy snow is probably Scotland and northern England but that snow risk could trend north or south in the next few days so one to watch.

Friday and next weekend is very uncertain but we may see the rain and snow clearing away southwards with drier but colder weather returning from the north.

Summary: Starting cold but soon turning mild, wet and windy. Colder again mid-week with more rain and snow.
