What about all these rounded figures? It is possible there could at least be a 40.4C somewhere that hasn't been written down yet?

They have generally been pretty quick off the mark when a new record has been set so maybe nothing higher than 40.3. But Cambridge BG and Brogdale could be late entries.

We need a serious upgrade to the way this works.

Why can't these weather stations transmit instantaneously like the ammeteur ones do?

Only 1 hour until we get to see the maxima from all the stations (barring the manual ones). I don't know if there are any other manual stations in the hot zone - there is a list of them somewhere.

Edit: see here https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-synoptic-and-climate-stations

Tetford and Denver are the only possible contenders I reckon, apart from CBG and Brogdale.

I saw a few people mention Waddington as a 40+ but had no confirmation yet.

Carlisle got up to 34.4 (nd might have been higher in-between the hours) and I know the weather station used there is at the ex-RAF facility in the north of the city only 5-6 miles from Gretna across a flat plain near sea-level as the crow flies, so I reckon Gretna would have recorded the same figure +-1C

https://goo.gl/maps/keeiD2uwCuiybA28

Carlisle used to belong to Scotland so we can just claim it directly too

Another thing to consider is that the quoted temperature of 34.8°C at Charterhall is probably only the highest hourly reading for that station which helps to explain why it is only provisional just now.

It is only when the 18z SYNOP data comes in that we will know what today's actual maximum temperature was there and that applies elsewhere in the UK as well including those stations where the temperature has gone above 40°C.

This means that any record which has already been provisionally announced is likely to be officially declared with even higher values being confirmed for those records.

For here in Scotland, this means that we can't rule out the possibility of the new record actually being over 35°C once those actual maximum temperatures are known.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

I'm not sure that's the case - the Met Office seem to get the instantaneous figures much earlier than us - they quoted higher figures than the hourly ones for Kew and St James's Park, among others - they never showed a 40C on the hour but the Met tweeted about them going over 40.

Not for this thread really, but suffice to say that there is no room for opinion when it comes to clear evidence.

Same over here. We always get rounded top of the hour readings from official reports, but have to wait until the evening or even the next day to get the highest/lowest decimal reading.

Does anyone know if the 850 temps have been higher than yesterday's record at Cambourne? Could they have reached 25C?

All eyes on Cambridge BG then. Cambridge NIAB was 39.9c so I think there is a good chance.

They should tweet the reading tomorrow. They can't open the screen to take the measurement until 10am :)

38.2C IIRC. So 0.5 below the BG.

Edit: no, that was the airport. NIAB was 38.1C. Apply the same correction and we get 40.5.
