Just had 3hrs + of thunder and lightning. Best I've seen in years. Not often we are in the sweet spot but we were tonight 👌👌⛈️⛈️⛈️

Absolutely nothing for here in Edinburgh though as per usual.😡
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Yes, indeed, it was incredible.

And yet, most of it died out during the night leaving only sporadic, mostly light rain, chiefly in the far north. Other areas (esp further south) had some clear spells. Some of these widespread thunderstorms would keep on going all night, peaking at midnight.

I suspect these storms where formed by direct surface convection (i.e, Cb from Cu con clouds), convecting violently when it reached medium level heights where patchy Ac cas clouds would have occurred, but have not maintained significant instability at this height in the night.

In Lowestoft, I have seen Cb clouds developing straight from Ac cas in the last 30 years, whilst the lower layers were very stable; some of these became spectacular nighttime thunderstorms.

Some heavy thundery showers around Shetland Islands a little earlier today. Of course, there's no radar coverage of the Shetlands on the Met Office site.

An unexpected lively shower passing over just now - peaked at 36mm/hour rainfall rate. Neither GFS nor MetO foresaw that one, with the latter saying "Cloudier in the east, especially along the Kent coast, with perhaps the odd spot of light rain."

It's proper convective rain too, the sort that has massive raindrops which make large wet circles when they land...

Love that sort of rain. Impressive rain rate there to, Retron, though anything above 100mm/hour is something that raises the hairs on the back of my neck. Late summer and throughout Autumn best time to see rates on that scale, for here at least.

Dull, forboding look over Sheffield at the moment with yellowish skies and strongly convective clouds, i.e, Cu con clouds (and relatively high cloud bases of over 1000 m). Would not be surprised to get a thunderstorm in the next few hours.

I'm on the edge of a thunderstorm not far from Ringstead Bay in Dorset. Waiting in car park as it will be too risky on the beach. It formed quite fast before I set out.

I expected the warnings to follow the same path here but this late evening storm formed within half an hour over Poole/Bournemouth and moved over Wareham, Lulworth Army Ranges before petering out over the sea near Weymouth. High level stuff but potent and not something to be ignored whilst waving a carbon wand on the shore. So I stayed a bit in the car to enjoy the noise and then went home.

Look at France right now, it's amazing what that little stretch of water keeps at bay.

I’m surprised nobody’s posted on here yet. There’s been some thunder storms around.  We had one clap of thunder around 2pm, no rain and nothing since.

Nothing surprises me about this forum these days given as it's generally nothing like as busy on here on average as it was back in its heyday a number of years ago.

This thread might get some activity during tomorrow though as the north and east of Scotland is due to be under a yellow warning for thunderstorms during tomorrow with Edinburgh being included within that.

Given that nowhere in England is under that warning though, I'm not too sure about that and in any case, I've lost track of the number of times that Edinburgh has been under a yellow warning for thunderstorms only for nothing to actually end up happening.

We tend to be more likely to get thunderstorms though we were already in a generally wet spell of weather, and we're now coming towards the end of what has been an exceptionally wet spring here, so we could well get those thunderstorms tomorrow.

I got caught in a thunderstorm at around 17:30 today. I'd just dropped my girlfriend off in Oldham (where it was sunshine) and got hit by a torrential downpour on the M60 at Prestwich, where it slowed the motorway right down to 30mph. I noticed a couple flashes to the north at times as well. What's interesting is by time time I got on to the M61 at Bolton, it was virtually bone dry again. It really is remarkable how localised these intense downpours can be.

We were under a yellow thunder storm warning yesterday that covered a very large area. The lightning map showed some good echoes as well, so I expected there would have been some reports.  Maybe the Bank Holiday is having an effect on postings.  That was our third yellow warning this month, that the failed to deliver.

I was hoping to write something exciting on here yesterday and was also hoping for a few good storms, that was until the Met Office put up that late yellow thunderstorm warning for us here and my hopes suddenly vanished, true to form the thundery showers didn't happen, we had 16mm of rain though, now that was exciting. 😒
