Conclusion:
There was some warm weather during the first half of September, but daytime maximum temperatures ended up being no warmer than average. In addition to that, there was some very cold nights during the latter part of that month, and even an exceptionally early air frost which was the first air frost that I have ever seen during September. This meant that in the end, September was a slightly colder than average month, especially with regards to the overnight minimum temperatures.
For a while, it had looked as though September was going to be a wet month overall as it got off to a wet start. However, an exceptionally dry spell of weather then set in from 13 September, which resulted in us experiencing a period of 18 consecutive days without any significant rainfall, even whilst various other parts of the UK had become more unsettled later on. That run of relatively dry days (they weren't all completely dry, but all of those days had only a fraction of 1 mm or less on each of them, with the vast majority of them being completely dry) finally came to an end during the early hours of this morning but in the end, September was a drier than average month overall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of official rain days, thus ending the run of wetter than average months which we experienced during the summer. September was therefore only our first drier than average month since May.
Overall, September wasn't as exceptionally dull as any of the three summer months which preceded it and despite the rapidly dwindling amounts of available daylight at this time of the year, September was actually sunnier overall than August. However, that still wasn't enough to give us a sunnier than average month and in the end, September ended up being slightly duller than average here which means that we still haven't had a sunnier than average month here since May.
