I don't know, the state is testing at more than double our rate (~1.4m tests to date) and they have confirmed ~350k cases so far.

Its semantic rubbish. I'm telling you now, this is my position:

I believe it would have been possible to return to the kind of normality we experienced in February (which is what I meant by 'virtual normality') I did not, nor ever claimed, that it would have been possible to return to a situation prior to the pandemic.

I haven't U turned in the last 2 hours. This is your problem, you care more about making quick gotcha points then what my position actually is.

If we rewind to how this saga began, GtW merely disputed your claim that if lockdown procedures had been followed we'd by now be 'virtually back to normal'.You could have saved yourself and GtW time and energy by just clarifying that saying 'virtually back to normal' was an error on your part, but instead you initially denied saying it (it was there in black and white!) then claiming you were correct in some context you'd concocted inside your your head.

Don't know whether this has been posted yet, but clarity emerges from the fog now the full document has been published:

Step One – Wednesday 13th May

Work:

  • Workers should continue to work from home rather than their normal physical workplace, wherever possible.

  • Workers who cannot work from home should travel to work if their workplace is open.

    • e.g. food production, construction, manufacturing, logistics, distribution and scientific research in laboratories.

    • Exceptions being hospitality and non-essential retail

  • workplaces should follow the new “COVID-19 Secure” guidelines, which will be published this week

Schools:

  • A full reopening of schools is not on the table

  • Hope that Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils will be able to return to school, albeit in smaller class sizes

  • Government hopes secondary school GCSE pupils will get some face-to-face time before the summer holidays, however as a supplement to continued online classes

  • Nannies and childminders will be allowed to resume work, enabling more parents to return to work.

Travel:

  • Government to publish advice this week to transport operators on following appropriate guidance to make their services COVID-19 secure

Face-coverings:

  • Homemade cloth face-coverings can help reduce the risk of transmission in some circumstances

    • Not the same as a facemask used by health workers

    • Shouldn’t be used by young children or primary age children or those with respiratory conditions

Public spaces:

  • The risk of infection outside is significantly lower than inside

  • Cannot meet up with any more than one person from outside your household

  • Unlimited exercise

  • However, playgrounds and outdoor gyms will remain closed

  • You can drive to outdoor spaces irrespective of distance, provided you’re not crossing boundaries between England/Scotland/Wales

New world order coming.

just read the detail on gov.uk and you can play golf and tennis for example with one person who is not from your household but you must maintain social distancing.

Yes, but some people will still manage to be in stage 6.

The Hospital Deaths for the four nations don't correspond with the total UK deaths announced each day, because the totals are taken at different intervals. So today we apparently have more hospital deaths than the deaths in all settings, that's just because of interval differences. These discrepancies will work in both directions and don't need analysis.

Meanwhile, here's a graph showing how the reported death dates and actual dates of death compare.

I never denied saying it, I merely said it was not intended to mean back to normal in the pre COVID sense.

Perhaps it was misleading, perhaps the terminology was wrong. Fine, I'll happily admit that. But after explicitly clarifying exactly what the position is multiple times, GTW still insists that I meant something else. So what, I lied about my own position now?

Its ridiculous, its clearly an attempt to score a gotcha point.

Yes, that is correct. Is in the new guidelines. Again people need to understand that provided there is no cross transmission.

Oh lordy. At risk of being sucked into the vortex of another such 'debate', you did indeed deny saying it.

Quantum wrote:

If everyone had done what they were told during the lockdown we would be virtually back to normal by now.

GtW wrote:

We wouldn't have been 'virtually back to normal' because the measures taken weren't designed to eliminate the virus, merely to contain it.

Quantum wrote:

I never said back to normal. I said back to February type conditions which is definitely possible

You'd never made mention of 'February type conditions' up until that point.

Like I said, if you'd have just corrected yourself or clarified in that reply to GtW's reply to your original assertion, we all could have saved ourself some bother.

In Paris, commuters who use the Metro in rush hour would need to have a letter from their employers explaining why they need to use the metro at that time of the day.

I could believe this, most of our new cases could be from care homes (shameful).

Been watching PM answering questions in the House live. He is struggling somewhat to answer apart from the  friendly set up ones. He has got quite flustered a couple of times. I think one of the problems is he can't use his usual cheeky chap jokey routine on this subject. The one he is clearly lying about and not answering is the fact that he did not discuss the new measures with the devolved governments. His only answer was to keep saying that they could make their own decisions because they have different R values. But surely they are lower in many of the devolved regions so why would they make them stricter than England?

edit: Just said we are currently getting "billions of pieces of PPE to where they are needed". Billions? Honestly?
