If this volcano in Bali blows, it could lower global temperatures by between 0.2 - 0.4c during the following 1-3 years. One to watch.

Global temps are probably due a cyclical drop eitherway.

Stromboli is worth a watch right now.

Every often there is significant explosive activity to the left of the the red glow.

Edit if you listen with speakers/headphones you can get the sound as well. Made me jump a few minutes ago when I was on another page.

Interesting going on at Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii Big Island, at the moment.

Extract from USGS Volcanoes

Starting on the afternoon of Monday, April 30, 2018, magma beneath Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō drained and triggered the collapse of the crater floor. Within hours, earthquakes began migrating east of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō, signaling an intrusion of magma along the middle and lower East Rift Zone. As of about noon on Wednesday, May 2, these earthquakes continue along the lower East Rift Zone, with many reports of earthquakes felt by residents in nearby subdivisions. On the map, the orange dashed line marks the approximate area within which most of the earthquakes are located based on automatic earthquake locations and analysis by seismologists. All earthquake locations are preliminary.

Puna residents reported to USGS-Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists the recent appearance of ground cracks on a couple of roads in and around Leilani Estates. No steaming or heat were observed to originate from the cracks, and the cracks are currently still small (no more than several inches across). These cracks result from deformation of the ground surface due to the underlying intrusion of magma.

Following on from the last post on Kilauea, Hawaii, an eruption is now occurring on the fissure.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, the structure of Kilauea being a hot spot under the middle of the large Pacific plate, means that there will be plenty of lava flow but seriously explosive eruptions are unlikely.

I think that is a fair enough assessment but “random” rifting and the 6.9 quake yesterday shows it can be very dramatic nonetheless.

Agreed. Maybe not high on the list of global catastrophes, but you wouldn't want to be living next to it

Agreed! I found the description of “it felt like a giant snake was moving under my house” pretty scary when that “snake” is presumably lava. I think I would be reluctant to wander around the basement?

Had you noticed that an Alert level 3 is currently in place for Ambae in Vanuatu, aka Aoba, with the evacuation of possibly 11,000 people. Much trouble with dust. It is an interesting volcano with 2 crater lakes side by side, Voui and Manaro.
This BTW was James Michiner's Bali Ha'i in South Pacific - only wrongly depicted in almost every way - he never went there.

Perhaps I should be more careful before pronouncing. I've now recalled that Laki in Iceland had a similar mid-ocean fissure eruption in 1783 caused famine in Iceland and crop failures across Europe.

Hope not!

Thanks for that DEW.

Sir Joseph Banks played an important role in organising support for the Icelanders then and they still honour that help.

I take it Hawaii has reminded folk that we were warned about an 'active year' for eruptions/earthquakes due to tidal forces in our solar system putting a strain on the crust of our little speck of dust?

Could it be a Deniers dream and we see a number of impacting eruptions and a global pall of ash/dust to send temps spiralling downward?

If so 3 years hence will be an interesting time!!!
