That 'with some sleet and snow possible along the south coast and over hills for a time'. seems like an odd call.  Surely we would be expecting  'Away from the south coast and over hills for a time' if any snow is to be in the mix.

I think it will be a pattern like the one I remember from some years ago, when I was driving back to Chichester on the coast from Petersfield inland:

Harting Down 800ft asl - snowing and settling

Chilgrove Hill 500ft asl - snowing but not settling

Chichester 20 ft asl - cold rain

When was the last time there was a classic 'channel low'?

Southend-on sea (Your neck of the woods, I believe) has a ENS mean of 4cm's of snow by 18:00 on Wednesday 8th.

Big upgrade in snow for the south.

The 18z Op T2M is a warm outlier (mildest run) for tomorrow.

Yet Met Office and BBC show rain for Plymouth. Be interesting what happens.

If the precipitation makes it to the Thames Estuary there is likely to be a mix of above zero DPs - as in Dec 2022 if you go 5m inland could be a covering. Frustrating in marginal events, bring back a true continental feed with low DPs! Hopefully some will do well but I can see a non event now

Last night's 18z GFS has 8mm of rain here, falling at temperatures between freezing and 1C - delightful. A few miles inland, at Maidstone, that zero degree rain becomes snow.

The MetO raw has 12 hours of rain starting this afternoon, heavy at times, 3C throughout.

I'm expecting nothing, that way I can't be disappointed. Just my luck, though, things corrected north but it's just too warm! That 1.2C January warming in the past 30 years makes all the difference...

APERGE has shifted north all be it patchy

Could be just could be a terrific performance from gfs she needs a bow for sticking to her guns

Latest 0z fax has moved it much further north with a slight pivot into SE

Pert 14 on the GEFS would be nice.  Snow today, friday and then a much better positioned high to maintain surface cold. We can only dream!

No snow, but then it only showed sleet for last Saturday evening and we got a couple of hours of heavy and settling snow out of it.

ETA: I see the Met Office have also updated their weather warning, giving as the reason: "Impact level reduced but the likelihood of at least some sleet and snow has increased. Parts of east Kent have been removed."
