Light rain now set in - and forecast to last, getting heavier, for the next 24 hours. February fill-dyke, indeed! Cloud base on the Downs lying at about 500-600 feet.

EDIT - an hour later, and the mist is obscuring the top of the cathedral spire at 270 feet

9.8C. Rain

Perhaps this thread should be merged with the precipitation thread?

Personally, I prefer the two separate threads as they are.

Precipitation threads are only ever created once every month and so if you merged these threads with that, you would only really have one thread per month where you could report the general current conditions for your neck of the woods (which this thread is for).

In addition to that and if you have ever read my own posts on the precipitation threads (I have just posted one there just now), you will notice that I go into quite a lot of details there about rainfall amounts and the number of rain days with those details being reported the month, season and year in question.

If you merged that thread with this one, that single combined thread (which would probably have to named something like "mmmm yyyy - Current Conditions and Precipitation Thread" where mmmm is the current month and where yyyy is the current year) could well become very cluttered very quickly and the whole purpose of having that separate monthly precipitation thread was to reduce that clutter.

However, it is not up to me to decide that. That is up to the rest of you to decide whether you want to keep those threads separate or have a combined monthly current conditions and precipitation thread.

If the rest of you want to have a combined thread for that, I will happily go along with that, although my own preference is to keep those two threads separate as mentioned above.

Meanwhile and back on topic, today is a day which falls only once every four days and so the only reason that today's date even exists is due to this year being a leap year.

In addition to that, today is also the last day of this month and the final day of the meteorological winter.

As regards to the weather, today has started off on a bright and sunny note here in Edinburgh after the clearance of overnight rain.

This morning is also back to being frost-free here but as from tomorrow, I will no longer be bothered about that as we will then be into the start of meteorological spring.

Meanwhile, the temperature here in Edinburgh was around 6°C as at 8:20am GMT (08:20 UTC) this morning.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be taken literally, hence the question mark - I'm just fed up with the amount and persistence of the rain down here.

No need to apologise for that.

I think that this forum should always be looking to evolve over time and I'm sure that Brian would clearly welcome any new ideas for improving it.

The possible merging of the CC and precipitation threads is one such idea and who knows, it might be what people on this forum actually want (we will never actually know whether that is the case or not unless we put that out as an actual question to this forum's members).

For now though, I will continue to assume that there will be no such change unless others come on here to say that they would rather see such a change.

In any case though, there are also the seasonal moaning threads which I would say, are the more appropriate threads for stating how fed up you are with all of the recent rainfall.

Actually turning out more drier and brighter than I thought so far today, even felt spring-like when I popped out to get papers.  10.6 C & high 90% H but winds are light. Of course, things will turn crap again soon.

My lawn is crying out for the first mow of 2024 but it's been so soggy and wet that I've not been able to do it (although in fairness I have been rather preoccupied with things lately, including my mum taken ill over Christmas and sent to a hospital then moved to an assessment unit to finally now her hopefully forever home at a local care home).

Some rain in the early hours (3.2mm), but otherwise it's been a cloudy and calm end to the meteorological winter here. A high of 9.2°C and a low to be determined this evening.

White rabbits!!

It's the first day of yet another month and the first day of meteorological spring.

Here in Edinburgh, we didn't get all that many frosts during the winter and yet, this spring has started off on a cold and frosty note with an official air frost at all three of my local stations (you really couldn't make that up!!😡).

There is some high cloud to my south though, but today should start off on a bright and sunny note once the Sun comes up.

Meanwhile, the temperature here in Edinburgh was around -1°C as at 6:30am GMT (06:30 UTC) this morning.

The temperature has dropped a whole degree within the last hour from 6.3c to now 5.3c with the onset of heavy, squally showers. The difference is marked as it's gone from cold and calm to colder and a bit nasty. I'm not looking forward to leaving for work!

Now 3C and uncomfortably numbing sort of weather with frequent heavy sleet. Most unpleasant but to be expected at this time of year.

Cloudy and windy (gusts into the low 40s earlier, and mid 30s presently) - heavy rain is approaching from the west.

6.2, dew 5.3, after a low of 2.3 earlier. There's been 3.2mm of rain since midnight.

(And yes, I'm looking enviously at reports of sleet and snow elsewhere!)

Well, we had a nice and sunny start to this morning but it's now clouding over here and the temperature has gone up to around 2°C here in Edinburgh.

However, that overnight minimum temperature and the resulting official air frost will officially count as a part of the winter data as that was recorded before 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning.
