The rain has stopped, it's calm and briefly brighter and the milder air has arrived at last, we've jumped up to 14 C. I'm keeping half an eye on the Irish thunderstorms heading into SW Scotland

Sadly, that's not quite the case here in the north of Edinburgh where I still can't see any signs of any sunshine.

Today's highest hourly temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank has only been 14.6°C. That is still much higher than what we witnessed during yesterday though and since that is very close to that elusive 15°C mark, it is possible that the actual maximum temperature might end up above that when that comes through with the 18z SYNOP data.

If that happens (and there can be no actual guarantees that it will at this stage), it will be the one and only time (since this is the last day of the month) when the temperature will have reached 15°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

That is still very poor and it won't be enough in the end to prevent this month from being colder than average overall.

As I am writing this, this Sun is now finally starting to appear here in the north of Edinburgh but sadly, that is also happening too now to prevent this month from going down as yet another duller than average month.

Having said that though, the wind has now changed direction and is no longer coming in from off the North Sea.

That in turn has helped the temperature to recover to around 14°C here in Edinburgh as at 5pm BST (16:00 UTC) this afternoon.

I can indeed, confirm that because today is the last day of this month, today will go down as being the warmest day of this month in this month's final statistics regardless of what happens between now and 10am BST (09:00 UTC) tomorrow morning when this month officially ends according to how each observation day is defined by the Met Office.

In addition to that, today will also go down as our one and only day when the temperature actually got above 15°C, but this ended up being a very close call which couldn't even be determined by the raw SYNOP data as that has showed a maximum temperature of exactly bang on 15.0°C even when that is reported to the nearest 15°C.

In end, I need the raw BUFR data to resolve this matter. The raw BUFR data system is a more up to date system than the older SYNOP data system and reports temperatures to the nearest 0.01°C.

From this raw BUFR data for 18Z, today's maximum temperature for Edinburgh Gogarbank is shown to be 15.04°C when that is reported to the nearest 0.01°C and  from this, I can now confirm that today's temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was indeed, above 15°C thus making today the one and only occasion during this month when the temperature there has gone above 15°C.

Having said that though, the fact that this is as warm as it has got all month when we are only just over a month away from the start of meteorological summer is still very poor fare indeed.😡

White Rabbits!!

May Day!! May Day!!

We have now entered into the final month of the meteorological spring, and this morning has started off on a much warmer note than of late with overnight temperatures at Edinburgh Gogarbank dropping to no lower than 9.3°C which is actually higher than a lot of our most recent daytime maximum temperatures.

Today has also started off with some sunshine at times as well, although there is also some cloud around.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9am BST (08:00 UTC) this morning) was already up to around 13°C here in Edinburgh.

It is still an awful struggle to have a warm day here, it is 13C now but still misty overcast.
Yesterday reached 15.2C - highest this year - for about ten minutes then showery rain all afternoon and back to 10C

May starts off on a warmish note here: 16.3C and partly cloudy, following a high of 17.3C earlier in the sunshine.

The dewpoint's back to double figures (11C at the moment).

Here in Edinburgh, normal service means nothing actually happening as we generally don't get interesting weather here as was shown yesterday when that continued to be the case, despite the fact that we were under an official Met Office yellow warning for thunderstorms during yesterday.

Today started off on a nice and warm note, but the temperatures have been refusing to rise here since then as has been the case throughout this spring up until now.😡

Now, the wind has once changed direction to be coming in from the North Sea once again. As a result, the temperature here in Edinburgh has dropped back to around 10°C and it still overcast with even a little bit of light drizzle.

Yuk!!

As John has mentioned, a day of two halves here. Had a very productive morning in the garden. Sunny and 15 C with a light west wind.
Then, early afternoon the cold front arrived from the north and now it's back to cold and drizzly with a north wind, 9.5 C
