Below freezing here now at -0.4c and the snizzle falling has coated the cars, roofs and grass.
Main course still to come , just might have to be patience until later  in the day tomorrow for anything significant.

Damn, damn that southeasterly wind snow shadow effect. An absolute pain in the arse. Heavy snow in all those other cities, but all Manc will no doubt get is a few flakes of sleet in the wind.

Fingers crossed for you

Just for interest down here in the far SW the temperature didn’t drop below 7.5c last night and today maxed out at 12.6c. Three hundred miles north is was around 1c and snowing…. I think that’s amazing.

Don't get too despondent. I think Manchester will get more than Liverpool. And, as the ppn is more frontal, I wouldn't worry that much about direction. Can't see it being a memorable event in either city, though. I reckon 1-3cm Liverpool; 2-5cm Manchester.

Different story for Leeds and, especially, Sheffield though. And indeed for places like Oldham, Bolton, Huddersfield, Halifax, etc.

Altitude a huge factor. The curse of our climate (oh, how we were spoilt in that 09-13 period, where the air aloft always seemed cold enough 😥)

Hello mate 🙂

Sadly the very fact the precipitation is frontal is part of the issue. I learned in 2013 (with some coaching from @TomC ) , that the southeasterly wind dries out precipitation in a very specific area including Greater Manchester and North Cheshire.

Don’t be surprised to see snow tomorrow in west Cheshire and Merseyside, a dry slot around Manchester, with it peeping up again east of the city and towards the hills. Happened frequently in 2013.

Still, uncertainly remains, so we shall see. Looks quite marginal at points, regardless!

Good luck.

Fingers crossed. We have the elevation here in Queensbury. The highest village in England I believe. So far this winter we've had no more than a cm or two. This could be the last hurrah and the models are indicating close to a full day of snow and I'm WFH tomorrow and Friday.

It's now snowing here in Edinburgh although that hasn't come to anything just yet although there is the odd very bright echo on the precipitation radar map just to my NE and so, this could be that North Sea streamer which Jerry was mentioning on another thread a few days ago.

The snow has now got much heavier here in Edinburgh and is now settling quite nicely on the ground with the temperature already down to around -1°C as at 9pm GMT (21:00 UTC) this evening.

So far the Forth Streamer has been catching the north of Edinburgh as it moves in from the NE giving snow cover there.
There's been another streamer to my south giving snow to the Lammermuirs and Pentlands. Apart from the odd flake, nothing here.....there's something lurking offshore with my name on it though 😁

We ended up with about 2-3cm of lying snow from this afternoon/evening’s snow, so I’d estimate at least twice what we had this morning.

That snow streamer has broken up and moved away to leave us with some cloud still around, but also with some decent breaks in that cloud. As a result, everything is now becoming very icy here but there is now about 1cm of lying snow here in NW Edinburgh which is all looking very nice indeed.

It's not very often that the north of Edinburgh gets more snow than the south of Edinburgh but then that is just typical of the hit and miss nature of any forms of convective precipitation.

However, I'm sure that you will get your turn to witness that before too long.

First 'proper' snowfall of the season right at the death. Would much preferred to have had one of the decent falls that were around in December.  Light snow in the morning, transitioned to a sleety mix in the mid part of the day before back to snow during the afternoon, still going now.  Perhaps a couple of inches.

Still looking very murky what's going to fall out of the sky tomorrow.  As it stands, rain preceded by snow as the band moves north.  But who knows, perhaps the cold will hang on to keep it wintry.
