New thread seeing as we are approaching mid May and the first threat of Thunderstorms at the weekend heading up from the south on a warm and muggy southerly.

Now that would be interesting to experience after what seems many years - a proper French import arriving at dusk so you can go to the coast and watch the light show majestically coming across the Channel with a suitably accompanying soundtrack.

We lost everything now as I know it used to start in May to Sept, 1 in May and Sept and 3-5 days each summer month now none at all.  Night time during the storms used to be 18-21C now no more mostly over 10C and rarely over 15C.

Interesting summary though perhaps open to interpretation and analysis.

Well if we do see a return to traditional thundery imports and not home grown affairs I would take a punt and suggest next winter will be of a form we haven't seen for some time and probably quite unwelcome too. Well for me anyway with the high energy costs. The Law of Sod and no model analysis here.

Whatever. The bledur (and my expectations) look like they've been more or less banished at least by the Met Office. The BBC remain more bullish for some thundery stuff, even some heavy rain on Monday.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday (BBC)

Saturday will see fine conditions with plenty of warm sunshine in the morning. Cloud building in through the afternoon with a few showers in the evening, potentially heavy with some thunder. Sunday will be another warm day with a further risk of thundery showers. A cloudy start to the day on Monday with heavy rain for many. Drier in the afternoon with some sunshine.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday: (Met Office)

A warm day on Saturday with long lived sunny spells for most. Cloudier at times on Sunday and Monday, perhaps with a few showers, although still some warm sunny spells.

Take your pick.

I would pick the BBC outlook atm as i think the weather has now broken from the long dry spell in many parts and next weel looks warm but heavy rain around as well . See what the Met Office say in another 24 hrs. I note that the automated M.O forecast for my area is now showing rain Saturday night whereas at 6 a.m it was showing dry .

Not convinced it will be that wet in the SE next week. As for thorms I'm also of the view that they often underwhelm. Whether they have become less prevalent in this part of the UK in recent decades I do not know.

Hi Folks.

Thought I'd set up this thread as I noticed significant thunder activity now approaching Dorset:-

Looks like this coming week could see more thunder activity.

Just to bounce this up from heading to oblivion.

It seems that there were/are some thundery bits in the Channel and maybe they have even encroached into some Southern parts overnight.

But in this tiny part of Dorset although there's been some welcome rain overnight the electrical stuff was noticeable by its absence.

I even kept the curtains open just in case but no light shows here.

Unusual this spring and a first, to head to the office at the bottom of the garden dodging the drips of water off the thatch. Garden loves it but not a dramatic amount of rain.

A few more bites this week at the electrical cherry.

I have just noticed that and this reminds me of what happens in the winter when we have the snow potential threads which discuss the potential for snow (to save the model output threads from being too cluttered up) and the snow reports thread where people report any snow events which are actually happening (as a means of preventing the daily CC threads from being too cluttered up with that).

Because of  that, I was thinking that the original summer thunderstorms thread might have been the summer equivalent (even though we are still not into the actual meteorological summer just yet which therefore, makes any summer thread a bit early in any case unless we are discussing what could happen during the summer) of the snow potential threads where the prospects of upcoming thunderstorms might be discussed with this thread being the summer equivalent of the snow reports thread where actual thunderstorm activity is reported.

I think that is a good idea to have separate convective potential and convection reports threads in that fashion, but the big issue here is that this forum is a lot busier on average during the winter than it is at this time of the year. This means that there isn't as much of a need to take anything out of the model output (and daily CC threads) at this time of the year as there is in the winter, and having those two separate threads can also be confusing to a lot of people with the result that we often see people  posting into the snow potential threads by mistake instead of the snow reports thread and then being told by by members (such as Jerry) for doing so.

I am guessing that this is therefore, the probable reason why we don't usually have those same two separate threads for convective potential and convection reports at this time of the year, such as what we have for any snow events which occur during the winter.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

It was just rain here in the south, saw some electrical activity in the channel but it seemed to stay there last night.

Few strikes in the Isle of Wight and east of Bournemouth in early hours . Just heavy rain here but did hear a few distant rumbles . Another batch approaching now

Indeed.

I posted this in early April. -

Without looking at the records, the North Atlantic synoptics of last November and the present North Atlantic synoptics remind me of the 70's and early 80's when climate scientists commented that  something 'unusual' was going on in The Arctic.

Anyone agree with this? If so, what might the weather be like this summer hereabouts? More slack low pressure nearby with more thunderstorms?

The recent synoptics maybe a blip and just temporary but just for now, nice to see.

Met Office storm warning for tonight and tomorrow for the south.

Now that the main band has cleared north the humidity has gone up here with dew points now in the low teens - currently 14C DP.  Although I doubt there will be much in the way of thunderstorms this way

Picking up John's suggestion and closing the second thread on storms. I'll move one or two posts across.

If we get a really thundery summer and the Thunderstorms in May (as re-named) gets overcrowded, I'll start another one in June. That way we shouldn't get in a muddle over what is a forecast and what is a report.

The temperature despite the time of day and lack of sun has been climbing and dew points over the 15C mark so there is energy to fuel them

I’ve noticed on social media quite a number of people that go storm chasing in the UK. I found that a bit bizarre given the usually tepid nature of our storms. Hardly tornado alley. Trekking across the midlands to watch one high level cloud-to-cloud striker per minute

Just started raining heavily - much to the relief of my lawn. Still dead calm, which suits me fine.
