The pool of intensely cold Arctic air will pass over Mount Washington in the next few hours. The most recent observation gives air temperature -43C and mean wind 78 knots gusting 92 knots.

From the High Summits forecast...."Model guidance is also indicating that the tropopause could dip below the summit Friday night." The summit is just 1900m!

The all time extreme minimum there since the observatory opened in 1932 is -43.9C (-47F) so that will probably be beaten.

BBC latest on Gabrielle:
"Gabrielle buffeted Australia's Norfolk Island overnight and has begun to lash the northernmost region of New Zealand. Forecasters have issued "red" heavy wind and rain warnings for Auckland and Northland with 200mm of rain and winds of up to 130kph (80mph) expected..."

Update on Gabrielle. 12 Feb 2023
"Thousands of people are reported to be without power in New Zealand's upper North Island as the remnants of a tropical cyclone hit the country.  Gabrielle was downgraded from a category two to a category one storm before it made landfall but is still forecast to bring severe weather. The regions of Northland and Auckland are currently under a state of emergency."

If New Zealand had its own equivalent of the TWO forum, I would imagine that its summer moaning thread would be very busy just now with all of the recent weather events which have taken place there and of course, ex-cyclone Gabrielle is yet another one to add to that list.

They are clearly coming towards the end of a very poor summer in that part of the world and because of that, I would imagine that a lot of people who are there, probably can't wait to be getting on with autumn (which they are just over two weeks away from the start of) and then seeing what the coming Southern Hemisphere winter might then bring to them.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Seem unusual for a cyclone to hit NZ area ? Hope we dont get that severe wet cloudy summer here like them had recently.

True but then for the sake of the future of our environment, I also don't want to be seeing anywhere here in the UK experiencing temperatures of 40°C or higher during the coming summer, such as what we had last year.

Regardless of whether we have a decent summer or a poor summer though, we can already be more or guaranteed that the temperature here in the UK will at least get above 30°C at some point in time given that this seems to happen every single year now, whereas this never used to be the case in the past.

Terrible news for flood ravaged parts of New Zealand’s north island with another 200mm of rain forecast in the next few days

Flood-hit eastern regions, as well as Auckland, Coromandel and Wairarapa, are in for another drenching as a front moves up the North Island on Thursday.

Maybe this belongs in the environment thread but France is suffering a dry winter on the back of the record heat and drought last summer.

Some parts of the US will be 100F (38C) warmer than others at the same time.[sic]
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-64733809

Widely 2 feet of snow across N States, temps -22C in Montana, even a blizzard warning for Los Angeles
Simultaneously 35C in Texas and a probable highest (for Feb?) of 27C for Washington since 1874

What a load of crap. 👎

Sounds like the journalist just did a search for "100F in C", without thinking...

38C warmer is, of course, 68F warmer. And 100F is 56C, which is what, I suspect, they were aiming for.
