I heard a suggestion that it was borderline Cat 5, i.e. wind speeds of 156mph or above.  The storm surge looks pretty serious and worse than the original predictions, presumably because of the additional late intensification.

The suggestion is that it will reach up to 16 feet but the new protection system will protect metropolitan NO from the surge. There are some other areas however that are much less protected. The surge and rainfall are potentially very worrying (never mind that the wind speeds are still 150mph post landfall currently).

I think it will need a little analysis before the final landfall max speed is determined.

https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2021/08/catastrophic-hurricane-ida-hits-louisiana-with-150-mph-winds/

Ida breaking records:

Ida put on a furious display of rapid intensification overnight, with the pressure dropping from 985mb to 929mb (a fall of 56 mb) in 24 hours. ... In one 12-hour period, Ida’s pressure fell by a remarkable 40 mb – the third fastest pressure fall observed in a Gulf of Mexico hurricane since 1979.

Ida is the second major hurricane of the 2021 season; Grace also became a major hurricane earlier this month as it hit Mexico. The most recent Atlantic hurricane season with two or more major hurricanes by August 29 was 2005 – the year of Katrina.

... and ...

If the ports of the Mississippi River are closed for an extended period of time, the entire U.S. economy suffers, with impacts to the global economy and world food supplies. World food prices, vulnerable to extreme weather shocks, in May of 2021 hit their highest levels since 2011. It is very likely that Ida will shut down navigation on the Lower Mississippi River for weeks, and it will take months for shipping traffic to fully recover.

EDIT - meanwhile newly-named TS Julian is chugging N towards Greenland

Given the strength on paper, the area appears to have suffered little fundamental damage and they've got away with it.

They seem to have been quite lucky and people evacuated this time which has helped. Not hearing of many deaths thankfully and breaches of levees has been restricted to the smaller towns rather than New Orleans itself.

Yes and no. The new levees held and there appears to have been little loss of life but the power outage is forecast to last 6 weeks in some areas and there is major damage to industrial installations. Insurance companies expecting 'double digit billions' worth of claims.

Meanwhile  out on the Atlantic, Julian has gone, TD10 is now TS Kate but not doing much, and something that looks as if it could become a major development (would be Larry) is just off the African coast. All in all, very active and very early.

Ida now causing havoc in NY; 3" in one hour causing flash flooding to add to 9" in the last week of August Ominously the second link talks about Ida getting tangled with a stationary front under a strong jet stream which will upset predictions for N Atlantic weather

And to add to the disturbed weather, Larry is now expected to head northwards as a major hurricane in mid-Atlantic

More records broken around NY and listed here

The US National Weather Service issued comprehensive emergency warnings an unusual 48 hours in advance but it seems that most of the population was unaware. There's speculation that this is because people now get weather forecasts on social media where the content has been reduced to half a dozen words.

What is the record for a Hurricane being so far north? Where is Quantum when you need him?!

Mindy also developed before hitting Florida and will move into the Atlantic later
