Indeed. Despite the primary parameters being the right side of marginal, the ambient airmass ahead of the trough was not enough to cancel out the low-level mixing from air near the sea surface being advected in from the southeast. The coastal strip up to 5-10miles inland (and a bit further the more east you are) had just rain this morning.

Here on the English Riviera we really need a low dp feed that is more east than SE to get snow (or in very rare circumstances slack cold pooling).

Decent performance by some of the high res ppn models though it must be said

thanks Neil, that is a really helpful explanation....what surprised me this time was even places with higher elevation on the South Downs North of Chi...eg West Dean & Singleton had negligible snow..I guess you needed to have gone further north of Midhurst towards  Hazlemere to stand any chance...

Here in a higher part of East Sussex, it wasn't until midday that the rain/sleet turned to heavy snow for 30 minutes which did settle fairly well on an already wet surface. Now thawing away of course.

The same for Portsmouth. Rain and temperatures as high as 5.5C at 7am this morning.. but at 1am it was -4C lol

Gorgeous sunny spells this afternoon which feel rather warm through the conservatory glass.

I'm banking on 'the curl' nudging about another 10-15 miles north and giving us here an hour or so before it all slides away southwards.

Not looking great, if I'm honest - the ppn is now drifting E-W just to the south of me.

Yeh, thanks saint... shame it didnt quite cross the mersey... pretty much fizzled to nothing after some early promise. 1.5cm which equals our best effort for the past 4 yrs or so?

Maybe even 6yrs back to the boxing day rain to snow event that gave about 4cm.

Arpege has me interested for later this week

Hoping for a dusting this evening before the frost sets in.

But it won't be a snow on snow event - almost all of our ~1cm has melted now

Not sire what track it will take as it goes south. It would be nice to get a fresh dusting to tidy up the melted bits before it all freezes tonight.

Zilch here in Cambridge, despite the radar showing light to moderate snow for the last hour or so!

Same here and I'll add Mr Fuming of Dorset.

Herman's Hermits - No Snow Today 2021

No snow today, the front has gone away
The garden stands forlorn, a symbol of the day
No snow today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by, don't know the reason why

and it goes on and on and on about the reasons for which but this being TWO are probably best left unsung.

Maybe best next chance for snow will be in February but its more likely to rain men down here than experience an icy Siberian weather blast from the past.

What’s the thoughts on later then, the echoes over the South West seem to be thickening as they head East but I thought the whole thing was supposed to pivot and head back South?

Certainly looks interesting the big blob currently over Taunton and seemingly heading this way. It looks ominous looking out of the window to the NW too so maybe it's our turn in snow starved  S. Dorset to get some and before dark perhaps followed by a sharp frost.

We've been quite lucky that most of the rain of late has happened overnight or early morning, and plenty of sunshine on offer during the day's 🙂 Plus the day's are starting to get notably longer now.

Not often I get an amber warning for snow here, one just been put on met office site, looking at radar I can't really see it but time will tell

Update. The big promising blob was successfully deflected bar a few spots of light rain and its now clearing nicely.

Unless something magically develops overnight I suppose that's it for snow in this spell of nondescript winter IMBY. Next weekends Northerly if it materialises is a farfetched option for snow but that direction is more likely to bring sunny beach walks and sheltering in the warm lee of the cliffs knocking fossils out of the rocks and a flask of coffee.
