Interesting, just checked the radar and it looks like it is snowing in the hills around the Lake District area.

Seen some images of the A686 on Hartside which is looking almost impassable. Cumbria police have issued warnings telling people to take care.

Chance of snow tommorow very likely for some areas.

E Scotland, NE England, E Yorkshire, Lincs and possibly E Anglia and the SE all likely to see at least a few flakes tommorow! Some accumulation with the heavier showers in NE England and E Scotland.

That won't be happening here in the east of Scotland though (at least here in Edinburgh, which always does very badly under a northerly air stream in that context)  if we go by the official Met Office forecast and given that we don't normally get "interesting" weather here in Edinburgh anyway, I certainly don't see that happening here.

The official Met Office forecast has it just being dry and sunny here with any shower risk being restricted to parts of East Lothian and the eastern Borders. Furthermore, the Met Office is forecasting a temperature of 6°C here tomorrow which isn't even the least bit cold for this time of the year.

In order for us to have any chance of getting snow here, the temperature needs to be a lot lower than that, otherwise anything which we do get will just be rain. Given how this so-called "winter" is gone so far, this is probably how it is most likely to end up and I have no doubt that in the end, we will just end up getting that same old borefest as usual which consists of a lot of cloud with possibly a little bit of sunshine, but with nothing happening in terms of our weather which is even remotely interesting.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Snow spots are back on the phone for Monday and Tuesday again after disappearing yesterday, Monday 30% chance and Tuesday a 40% chance so a bit of an upgrade.

Calm down!!

I  would like to ask you  when "not usually" getting interesting weather suddenly became the same thing as "never" getting any interesting weather.

I am not aware at any time of ever saying that we never get any interesting weather because I am aware that this can happen on the odd occasion.

Indeed, you have just quoted a very valid and perfect example of that, so please do not ever accuse of saying that this is something which never happens.

All I am trying to convey here is the fact that we very rarely actually get interesting weather and that our weather on average is not as interesting as it is across the rest of the UK.

That is surely enough for my claim that interesting weather doesn't normally happen here to be quite a valid one.

Go to the moaning thread then (you created it!). 1,000 word diatribes against Edinburgh weather don't exactly belong in a short-term snow potential thread. Needless clogging.

I'm sorry, but all I was trying to do was to report what I believe our chances are of getting snow based on the official Met Office forecast along with my own local experiences of the weather tends to be like in this part of the world.

This makes what I have posted here, perfectly relevant to this thread and I will continue to stand by that whether you agree with that or not. This was not intended to be a moan, and I apologise if that is how this has come across.

If all of you then still don't believe that what I have posted here actually belongs here after all that I have said here, then this forum is not worth even being a member of at the end of the day.

Arome is suggesting some showers for Norfolk/Suffolk later this evening which make it down to Kent circa 9-10pm - would hope they'd be of the wintry variety as we're in pretty cold air by then. Might bring a few flakes down here, which would be nice to see There's also a few more for central/eastern parts of Kent during the afternoon although not as organised as the later 'clump'.

Well looking at your post objectively the first half was dealing with snow potential but the second half really was just a good moan :)

Personally I think that sometimes people get too bogged down over what should and shouldn't be in each thread, there is always going to be a degree of overlap.

True.

If you look at the daily CC threads (which both you and I have even started on the odd occasion although these are mostly started by Caz these days), there is often plenty of content there, especially from the likes of Richard from Aberdeen which you would think, would be better suited to the moaning thread and yet no-one ever says anything about that.

Generally, I try to think very carefully about what I am posting before actually doing so in order to ensure that I am posting into the correct relevant thread. That is particularly true with the MO threads since I am more likely to be taken apart on those threads if what I am posting, isn't fully relevant to the actual model output at that time (isn't it funny though, that there are others who post irrelevant content on those threads all the time and yet, continually get away with doing so, so that those threads end up getting bogged down with irrelevant content anyway).

Just like everyone else though, I am only human at the end of the day which means that I can't always expect to get that 100% correct all the time and yet all too often, my experience on these forums is spoilt by those who expect that to always be the case.

Don't worry about it. You have to tread on egg shells with some members in some threads. If you dare mention the words "mild" or " modern winter" in a certain one you may risk being hung drawn and quartered !

Meanwhile back on topic, I reckon that our best chance of getting snow here in Edinburgh could come from around 28 December onwards as Storm Bella dives southwards and eventually starts to pull in more of an easterly wind.

Of course, a lot will depend on how cold it actually gets, but we could at least be in for some beefy wintry showers coming in from off the North Sea which could deliver quite a decent covering to at least inland and higher areas.

Indeed, it would be interesting to see if we might even get some more thundersnow with that.

Warning out for snow and ice for some for Sunday into Monday. Up to 10cm above 250m. Will be interesting to see if the initial band reaches as far East my location.

My worry for the North West is that strong winds off the Irish Sea tend to drive modified low level air right across the region. Much less of a problem later in winter when sea temps are colder.

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-12-28

Edit: Just seen the modelled precipitation, it looks like the winds will be off the land for this main band which is good for snow. We shall see!
