Mild northerlies are approaching though......I think we are in the southern hemisphere?????

It is actually possible for mild northerlies to occur here and this usually happens when high pressure is close by to our west. In that scenario, the air will tend to originate from a milder source over the Atlantic and then reach us as a northerly wind after coming in around the top of that area of high pressure.

However, the high pressure is further away this time and it looks as though those northerlies are still coming from the Arctic, so it seem very strange for these to be milder winds. However, the SSTs over the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea have been quite a bit warmer than average just recently. This might have been led to the thundersnow events which we had earlier on this month and could also help explain why we have mild northerlies heading our way as these winds would be more likely to be heavily modified by coming over those relatively warm seas.

Here in the north of Edinburgh, the snow has turned a lot more sleety, and the lying snow is now thawing with the temperature now up to around +1°C as at 11am this morning.

Just walked to the walk and loads of families are making snowmen, it’s lovely.

This must be what Matty H feels like.

There is a fair bit of thawing going on but it’ll freeze again tonight.

Manchester - one of the worst places for snow in the UK but sometimes it comes good.

Well the end of the snow is here! It's raining at 1 C as the warmer air aloft comes down from the north. It's been a good cold spell with 4 days of falling and lying snow here.
Hopefully get some more towards the end of next week?

Well, it's certainly been a lot better than last year's completely snowless December when I didn't even see a single flake of snow here in the north of Edinburgh throughout that entire month, let alone any lying snow, so I can't really complain about that.

Last clump of PPN delivered 10 mins of moderate rain, which wiped out all of this morning's remaining snow, plus a chunk of the frozen stuff.

Yeh, it's turned to drizzle now in South Edinburgh, though the metoffice is saying "heavy rain" - I somewhat disagree with that assessment - I had to stick my hand out the door to check if it was actually raining

The snow I've got should hang around a while, no thaw on the horizon, xcweather has it touching 5C next wednesday though 😮

Drizzling all day, bar early this morning when they fell as ice pellets

This cold spell has been a big bag of wet pants

Just been out for a walk in clear skies and -2.0c, everything frozen , ice on the side of the house even. If there was 6 inches of snow instead of a light covering of a couple of cm you could say it has been a classic few days. Fine margins but certainly very cold.

Similar here when I took the dog out. Still plenty of snow lying, despite the best efforts of occasional rain showers, which just freeze. Can't help rueing that if all the PPN over the past few days had been snow, we'd have had a decent accumulation.

A few snowflakes starting to come down now. Seem to be quite "dry" as Saint mentioned in the other thread. West Manchester and into Merseyside look like they've scored again with this.

Met office app shows heavy snow, it can't fathom freezing rain. The Dec 2018 event was a great example of this , showed heavy snow all day whereas other models showed heavy freezing rain.

Light snow here now, no sign of any sleet or rain so that’s good.

A few moderate bursts to the north too.
