LTA = 1981-2010 average for the month, season or year in question at that particular station.
Although we have had a very wet start to this month here in Edinburgh, this thread is making it look as though I am actually in one of the driest parts of the country just now with the way that is going.
To a certain extent, that wouldn't surprise me since I do live in a part of the country where interesting weather rarely ever happens, even though the weather may well be more interesting elsewhere.
I have to say though that given the amount of rain which we have had during this month so far, there surely has to be SOMEWHERE in the UK which has had less rain during this month than what I have been reported for here in Edinburgh. If not, then that just shows how wet the UK has been as a whole during this month up until now.
Looking ahead, I notice that the latest model output is showing a number of weather systems missing us to our south once again over the coming week with the GFS showing the rain missing us to our west towards the end of its latest rains, due to low pressure systems diving southwards.
If that comes off, the outlook isn't likely to be all that wet here from now on and this would result in this NE quarter of the UK being the driest part of the country during that outlook period.
Since our October 1981-2010 averages are higher than all of our other monthly averages throughout the year, this means that we still can't yet completely write off our chances of getting away with another below average month here, at least in terms of the number of official rain days, although those chances are now very slim due to the amount of rain which we have had so far.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
