Could see the leading edge of the anvil of these storms around sunset here - can now see distant lightning as well.

Most interesting. The surface temperatures don't seem high enough for this kind of thing, but they must be elevated storms (perhaps with cloud base of 2000 m or more.

On rare occasions here off the coast of Lowestoft, I have known heavy showers & thunderstorms, & yet with sea fog (in 2013, 2014 & 2018).

That decaying band of showery rain over the Channel looks to have rotation.

definitely rotating now with the core intensifying.. Could this be a super cell? Tornadic?

Storm with fairly heavy rain.  Main activity seems to have passed through the Eastbourne area heading NNE.

And you thought we had thunderstorms?

The southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh recorded 36,749 lightning strikes in just a 13-hour period on Tuesday, officials say.

Another let down as far as my back yard is concerned with a weedy 0.2 mm of rain. I think I might have seen a flash of lightning out of the corner of my eyes while I was "asleep" at 5 am but when i looked out the window I didn't see any more apart from a pretty looking rainbow.

The Folkestone harbour rain deflector remain as effective as ever.

While its there, any ideas what the build up of white is on the radar around London from the +9am frames? Last night there were a few other areas in the south which had this shading. Never seen it before.

Could well be flying ants as there are some reports of that occurring in the London area this morning, including one by someone on twitter saying it was so thick that visibility was down to zero. That sounds like Hell on Earth to me.

Last night I went to bed and there was an area of heavy rain on the radar south of the Isle of Wight, heading in this direction. I expected to be woken up by heavy rain or thunder, but actually there was none.

It's sunny and stupidly hot here again, really need a storm to freshen things up a bit!

Thanks Ian. That must be an invasion then! Maybe that site has changed its graphics in some way, but last night there was a lot of white shading in different areas of the south. It may come out at some point what it is, but in all the years of that site never seen anything like that before.

I think the flying ants sense their nests will be flooded & see this the best time to fly away.

Was hoping for signs of convection for some home grown storms today but not sure that will happen now. At least there was an early morning storm

According to the latest rain radar maps, there appears to be a nice cluster of storms down in the Scottish Borders, around Hawick. Sadly though, that rain band is much more fragmented once you get as far north as where I am here in Edinburgh, which is showing us yet again that it is usually always asking too much for us to get any sort of "interesting" weather in this part of the world these days, let alone a thunderstorm (yes, you could say that the recent high temperatures have been interesting, but that is about the only interesting thing which has actually happened with our weather over the last few months).

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
