So depression 29 looks to become a hurricane, but after making landfall over Central America it appears it or at least it's remains will renter the Caribbean sea and become the hurricane that the gfs was picking up earlier in the week. Looking at recent gfs it could eventually hit the gulf coast of the USA.

Has Goni broken the record. 195  sustained?

But no coverage at all in the western media

Eta has formed, equalling the number of storms in the 2005 season (which only reached Zeta, as one was identified post-season).

Will we see any more storms, delving further into the Greek alphabet? I'd imagine it's quite likely.

Goni missed out on the record, estimated to be 5 mph less than Haiyan in 2013

But caused massive damage anyway

Some estimates (it is only an estimate for Goni) put it stronger - see the link for discussion of accuracy..

https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2020/11/super-typhoon-goni-slams-into-philippines-as-strongest-landfalling-tropical-cyclone-on-record/

The top 10 strongest tropical cyclones at landfall in world history, according to data from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and JTWC are:

1) 195 mph: Super Typhoon Goni, 2020, Catanduanes, Philippines;
2) 190 mph: Super Typhoon Haiyan, 2013, Leyte, Philippines;
2) 190 mph: Super Typhoon Meranti, 2016, Itbayat, Philippines;
4) 185 mph: Great Labor Day Hurricane, 1935, Florida, U.S.;
4) 185 mph: Super Typhoon Joan, 1959, Taiwan;
5) 180 mph: Hurricane Irma, 2017, Leeward Islands;
5) 180 mph: Cyclone Winston, 2016, Fiji;
5) 180 mph: Super Typhoon Megi, 2010, Luzon, Philippines;
5) 180 mph: Super Typhoon Zeb, 1998, Luzon, Philippines; and
5) 180 mph: Cyclone Monica, 2006, Australia.

Ominously, seven of the 10 strongest landfalls in recorded history have occurred since 2006.

Eta now forecast to reach major hurricane strength (cat 4) just before landfall in Nicaragua.

Some models (e.g. SHIPS) are predicting a category 5 and 35" rainfall fortunately in a less populated area of Nicaragua and Honduras.

More general weather models like the idea that Eta will re-emerge on to the Caribbean and revitalise - the average predicted track in that case is a weird zigzag across the Caribbean

Eta almost a Cat 5. A very pretty storm and perfect eye

Now where? Eta doesn't know when to give up. After catastrophic rainfall around the Nicaragua - Honduras border, it's remains, zombie-like, are expected to revive in the Caribbean. But models can't agree on the relative  effect of the different steering influences. The latest thinking seems to be for it to recover as a hurricane in the Caribbean before moving off to menace Florida.

No it's Eta still hanging about. After crossing Cuba its will skirt around the Florida Cuba waters before heading out into the GOM. A likely landfall around the panhandle area on the 15th is current gfs expectations.

NHC track is for it to move out into the GoM after drenching S Florida. Eta could go anywhere after that.

Eta is looking far more organised/compact compared to last night.

I'm not convinced it's still only a depression - mid table tropical storm I'd say it looks.

Latest NHC discussion suggests it's not even reorganised into a TD yet.

Doh..... That's because it's now been updated, silly boy.  The earlier update said it was still just a disorganised cluster of thunderstorms with some evidence of a new centre forming.
