Westerly winds for the forseeable future making if feel cold but with a foehn effect here so no frost or snow and it looks well and truly bedded in - time to hibernate. The autumn was wonderfully bereft of them but they got going in December sadly. Wake me up when we get a nice calm day or an easterly, or southerly or anything but this relentless moaning in my chimney.....

Perhaps we might want to blame Richard from Aberdeen for all of that  as he has so often in other seasons, moaned about the lack of any sort of winds which have a westerly component to their direction. Now, it would appear that he has finally got his wish on that front and as a result of that, we are now paying the price for that by being stuck in this completely snowless horror show which is known as our "winter" with little or no hope of any sort of cold weather for the foreseeable future at least as though we were somehow, serving a lengthy prison sentence with getting that elusive significant cold spell being the equivalent of us being released at the end of such a sentence.

Heard the perfect song for this winter on the radio this morning: 'What Have I Done to Deserve This?' by the Pet Shop Boys After the outrageously awful festive period this winter is well past the point of no return, as far as I'm concerned, and just a case of damage limitation now. However it's such a total disgrace that the damage only looks like being compounded

The 26th - 30th December was the most revolting depressing and hideously unseasonable spell of tripe I can recall at that time of year and completely spoiled the festive season. It was vile with relentless gloom and wind for five days accompanied by sporadic light rain and drizzle. The temperature stayed above 9C for 48 hours. It was just repulsive. Late December 2018 was similarly mild but it was sunny and dry so, while unseasonable, not thoroughly unplesasant as well.

Another day of disgusting damp grey nothingness today with nothing temperatures that don't change a bit between night and day. It's been around 5/6C since yesterday afternoon. This was despite yesterday evening being clear but of course the vile wind that never lets up anymore was blowing. This means that temperatures constantly exhibit the pattern of almost zero diurnal range experienced in the horror January of 24 years ago. That took an exceptional record breaking permacast gloomfest. Now it's like this all the time regardless of synoptic set-up.

Winter 2013/14 was the worst of my lifetime and in almost all respects this atrocity is even worse so far

  1. Snow - 13/14 had a partial covering on 7 Dec and a mix of snow and hail on 24th Dec. 19/20 hasn't seen a flake so far. Moreover Nov 2013 managed a covering whereas Nov 19 had only two days with sleet.

  2. Frost - Dec 2013 managed four frosts totalling 40.8 hours below freezing. Dec 2019 managed one more frost but the duration was far lower at only 25.2 hours. 2015 and 2016 had an even lower frost duration but both saw some snow. Probably have to go back to 1988 to find a snowless December with comparably little frost.

  3. Cold - Coldest day of Dec 2013 had a max of 0.6C. Coldest of Dec 2019 was 3.1C which beat 2.9C in 2018 as the mildest 'coldest max' in my 15 years of records. It was also the first December I had recorded in which no day had a mean below 1C. Prior to 2015 only 2007 failed to record a day with a sub-zero mean.

  4. Rain - Dec 2019 was slightly drier than Dec 2013 but the rain didn't really set in until mid-January that winter. There was a four day dry spell in Dec and a five day dry spell in early Jan. Not had anything longer than three days since October - a desperately grim and depressing situation.

An unmitigated disaster that can't end fast enough. At least by February the sun will be higher in the sky and cumulus clouds will start to form again. A desperate state of affairs when that is all there is to look forward to.

Another horror stat is that December 2010 produced a longer duration of frost than any calendar year since: 393.7 hrs compared to a max of 367.3 hours in 2013 and 355.9hrs in 2016. Ridiculous

Richard? Iโ€™m surprised you havenโ€™t moved away from NE Scotland, considering how much you deteste the climate in Aberdeen.

Maybe because the weather is the same and it is the moaning thread.

It probably wouldn't really make any difference anyway as far as Richard is concerned because even if he did ever move to a different location, he would probably still be moaning about the weather in his new location, still not being to his liking.

This 'winter' so far seems to be a carbon copy of that of last year. Dull, humid and drizzly at times and largely mild with high pressure inflated to the near south.

Not really weather related though I suppose it is. Just driven to Weymouth and although it's a beautiful clear starry evening I estimate that about 4/10 cars were using fog lights. TBH I doubt they realise they have them on but it annoys me so I flash them if the road is otherwise clear.
At least the evenings are lighter than before Christmas.

Even the most ardent Mildie must be finding this winter and the current outlook somewhat wearisome. There's not even been an opportunity to post an erroneous "MetO Extended" chart in the MO thread.

I took the last two weeks off model watching; I needn't have bothered. Nothing has barely changed.

Even in NY the weather was generally mild and damp. No escape

It's so crap it's not even worth moaning about.

At best, we get a cold spell in the second half of winter/into spring when I'm far less arsed, and there's less possibility of lying snow staying around for a few weeks.

I have lurked around in the Model Output thread for years trying to gauge what the weather will be and I don't really remember a time where seasonal weather seemed so far away for so long. There's usually some excitement even if it fizzles out. For a decent wintery memorable spell, you really want your cold weather in December / January. Anything early Feb doesn't feel the same and late Feb into March, the days are noticeably longer and I start to long for a bit of sun and warmth.

Annoyingly, it is probably likely that we will get some form of cold snap even if short lived and it is likely that it will come more around February

I’m not a mildie by any means but the lack of snow doesn’t bother me anymore if I’m being honest. 90% of the time I don’t even notice the weather at all, and I’m just biding my time until spring and summer. I’ll take a snowless winter every year as long as the following summer is at least decent.

Despite being in one of the colder parts of the country today temperatures reached 10.9C earlier this morning. It felt positively spring-like when I walked into town. You can also instinctively sense the lengthening days, perhaps it is related to a slight uptick in Vit D production. Even if a cold snap does arrive in late January or February it won't be the same.

But he moans when the weather comes from the east, and now it's been blowing a westerly he is still not happy.

How come? February (and March!) cold spells are good because you know (or at least hope) that spring is just around the corner. A cold spell in December means you then have the whole of winter to slog through afterwards once the snow has gone.
