Absolutely proposterous suggestion for anywhere away from Devon/Cornwall, particulary the northern half of the UK.

Obviously double digit minima are way above average and are unlikely on any given day in winter. However in most parts of the country during an average winter I would imagine there would be 1 or 2 such nights so not unusual considering the winter as a whole.

It would be like saying that 30C is highly unusual in southern England because in an average summer the vast majority of days don't reach that figure yet in an average summer it most certainly would.

Assuming the stats he quoted were correct it would be much more like comparing it to a summer when 30C was NOT reached.

Indeed. Its nondescript and without sunshine miserable

Irony at this time of year to see Western Scotland getting the highest temps

Another stupid nonsense post. When did London ever go 16+ years without recording 30C?

30C is reached almost every summer in SE England and often several times. The same is not true of double digit minima in winter anywhere in the UK except perhaps the Scilly Isles.

Looking forward to spring when decent winter synoptics arrive again.Farmers were rescuing cars even here in mid march 2013 when they got stuck in 4ft drifts taking the short cut route over the Downs .

Doesn’t seem to have lasted though. Decent sunshine now, more like the “right” sort of winter HP.

Which is exactly my point!

30C is reached in southern England almost every summer just as in most parts of the country you could expect a double digit minima. Obviously excluding cold, wet, miserable, wrist slitting and suicide induing Aberdeen of course.

So why don't you go and whine about how there is less sun in winter than in summer?

Agreed 30C is reached most years.

But double digit minimum in winter are fairly common down here in big towns and coastal areas.

More especially in December and early January.

For all the moaning about ridiculously mild synoptics, down on the ground for many in the south this morning feels pretty wintry, with freezing fog and a decent frost, and a crisp sunny day to come once it clears.

Fog here but the frost had lifted by the time I left home. Overnight low of -0.5 at Farnborough.

1.5c here, so no BBQ start to day this far north either. In fact we didn't get over 8c during the day yesterday even though the forecasts were calling for 12 or 13c in places.

Well good news for the cold lovers, the beginning of January is looking a lot less mild than the models were showing just a few days ago. In fact, a few northerly blasts plus high pressure close to the country, I think it could actually be a deceptively chilly month. Maybe a lower CET than a lot of people might be thinking?

Not sure if we're lucky here but yesterday in North London was a perfect winter's day. Mild, light winds and clear blue skies followed by an amazing sunset. Back in St Albans today the sun has broken through early cloud and it's another very usable day. Just saying ......

Just had new Year's greetings from a cousin in utah, complaining about an exceptionally cold winter with lots of snow and another big fall forecast for new Year's Day. Bah!

Is it only me or is this incessant dullness starting to get on everyone else's nerves? At least it's been mostly dry I suppose. Roll on spring is all I can say...

Meanwhile to the east we've had unbroken sunshine past couple of days. Just clouded over in recent hours ahead of that rain band.

I live in the east coast of Scotland, but there is no nice sunshine here. It's raining here just now and very dark despite the fact that it is still only the early part of the afternoon. Because of that, I wouldn't like to imagine what Hungry Tiger's daily light readings would be for today if he was doing that from here in Edinburgh just now.

Yesterday was much drier, but still rather dull and overcast which means that to date, we are currently still waiting for our first recorded sunshine of the 2020s at Edinburgh Gogarbank and going by what it is like just now, I'm not expecting this latest permacast hell to end before tomorrow at the earliest.

This was exactly what happened two months ago at the start of last November, and that ended up being a substantially duller than average month.

Our only saving grace this time is that the days are now slowly lengthening which means that the maximum possible sunshine total for any given day will at least be higher at the end of this month, than what it is just now. That should increase our chances of escaping with a sunnier than average month this time, although I wouldn't exactly bank on that happening with the way that this is going just now.

I haven't seen the sun here since Christmas day - the unremitting gloom and fog does tend to get you down after a while. In truth I prefer wind and rain - at least you can justifiably hunker down from a storm.
I miss the good old changeable British weather.

It's pretty much dark here in Manc now.

We had a day of sunny spells yesterday - we were out walking the dog in the afternoon and even at gone 4pm it was still broad daylight under bright skies.

Same here in Exeter - as in a frost by 0900am - last frost we had here was 1st December 19 - first day of winter before both the AO and NAO went wildly positive and the stratospheric temps at both 10 and 30hpa crashed to -85c.

Horrible winter - i think i may copy and cut. It's the same old and so boring isn't it? lack of sunshine as well!? yuck.
