Distant booming now audible from those storms heading up towards me. Some very interesting cloud formations lit up by the low sun.

Edit: first flash of lightning just seen to my south followed by very deep boom. Very portentous

Suddenly huge blobby rain and a vivid orange sky with lightning streaking across

Edit: rain stopped after 5 minutes as suddenly as it started. Short but very dramatic!

Edit2: Curiously on studying the radar returns the rain rate dropped off dramatically at the it reached Cambridge which is par for the course. I expect it to reinvigorate over Norfolk. It should have got some lift off my patio as this was too hot to walk on barefoot earlier

I've just spotted a brilliant flash of forked lightning over the Pentland Hills to my south.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

This is just so frustrating now!!

There was an area of rain not too long ago which affected parts of the east of Edinburgh but missed here altogether.

Now, there is a whole line of storms with some intense echoes which stretched from just to the west of here down towards Dumfriesshire. That flash of lightning which I saw a while ago came from that line of storms, but this has missed us as well and headed further west.

For now, I am now relying on a couple of showers just to the south of Edinburgh but I wouldn't exactly be expecting them do do anything or even head over us where I live.

Given that we have just come to end of what has been our hottest day on record here in Edinburgh, this is showing that getting two "interesting" in the same day, is probably asking for too much here in what is normally the most boring part of the UK on average in terms of our weather.

EDIT:

Those showers are breaking up and losing their intensity as they head towards us, so they're not likely to do anything either.

Quite impressive mammatus clouds over east London at the moment, lit up by the setting sun.

We've had some rain & I saw some distant flashes to my south, followed by low rumbles, accopanied by some strong squally gusts, which you just knew were going to happen by looking at the tuberlent cloud overhead, within the last hour. It's now very dark & orange outside so we may be getting more very soon as the cloud is now completely covering the sky, unlike a little while ago when it seemed it was just the edge clipping us along the east.

Don't let the current soggy looking rain radar over East Kent fool you, it's hardly rained at all in the past hour since the initial heavy showery rain. Looks like high based stuff not making it to surface level.

Amazing burst just turned up here, lightning, thunder, driving rain and amazing gusts of wind, from nothing to 30mph gusts. Had to rush round house closing windows as it looked like something from a horror movie with curtains billowing and windows flapping. All that lasted 5 mins. Now just a ‘normal’ thunderstorm.

edit - just looked at radar and I’m not surprised amazing cluster heading our way!

What an excellent light show! Was outside for an hour before I could even hear any thunder. The rain has just started 90 minutes after the lightning. Inter cloud, crawlers, cloud to ground. All of it. Thunder is incessant and really deep and rolling. Best storm since one I remember when my kids were little, must have been early 90s 😆

Edit: That was over 2 hours of lightning and thunder!

I can't believe that trough has not exploded into life yet! Then again two light shows in a week simply does not happen here.
