Meanwhile, tomorrow's yellow warning for thunderstorms has now been pushed further west which means that we are now, no longer under that warning here in Edinburgh. That is such a pity as I was looking forward to the possibility of seeing perhaps, a storm or two here.

However, I'm surprised by that either because this is just telling us yet again that on the vast majority of occasions, we just don't generally get "interesting" weather in this part of the world because it is usually always elsewhere in the UK which gets that, and that is why this part of the world is the most boring part of the UK on average when it comes to our weather.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Is it just me or does this LP have some characturistics of a suptropical storm?

http://moe.met.fsu.edu/cyclonephase/gfs/fcst/archive/19073006/2.html

Subtropical phase space, weakening over land, upper cold core cutoff low over relatively warm seas.

Hmm.

If this was in the Med I'd proabably declare it a pre-medicane.

The storm system in the Dales is a classic example of a backbuilding storm train - cells die off at the head of the system to be replenished with fresh cells at the tail, so the overall impression is that the system is not moving very fast.

Some grand storms in Yorkshire this afternoon, for sure. We've had a couple of side swipes here with some good lightning, but nothing head on yet.

In terms of why they occurring where they are, the upper cold pool Q posted gives a hint, backed up by the CAPE:

Sorry Neil - missed that. Was down in York today, but friends that live near Bedale have been telling me about some sizeable hail up there and an extraordinary lightning show.

Worth noting the path of that low - impressively obvious in wind maps and the radar! Looks like being somewhat south of modelling. Implications....

I hadn't been following the weather today really, until I saw this from Swaledale: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0jTrTEnTiH/?igshid=1xthsfj4kurh3&fbclid=IwAR362HWkuSFM7WA9c7SrCTdSIYvSzbooEjYgAUxOLilMgnOD-sFWj_352zI

That's  where I was meant to be  going this weekend for a mountain-bike event. Unsurprisingly it has been cancelled. As  well as the damage to property there will be big financial losses with a three-day event,  with thousands of people meant to be attending, being cancelled just a few days out.

Truly horrendous conditions outside, looking at the radar this could be an awful night for flooding in some parts.

Quite a stark contrast to the forcast. We were forecast across the board to have anything from 40-70mm of rain this afternoon. With frequent thunderstorms...

In reality i saw a small shower this morning and its been lovely sunny and dry since.. despite being surrounded by showers on the radar. I even went and played golf.

What a very weird day its been.

Nice to have a positive turn of events for us for a change
