*Yawn* - that was one hell of a thunderstorm, keeping me awake when I'd normally be in deep sleep. It's going to be a LONG day!

That said, it was one of the most spectacular storms I've seen... frequent lightning, at one point every two seconds or less, and that went on for quite a while. Lots of rain, some hail at times (enough to make car alarms go off). No wind, thankfully.

The storms dropped 34mm of rain here, 33mm of which fell in an hour.

EDIT: Also very few rumbles considering the pretty much constant lightning. I did wonder (in my groggy state) why that should have been the case...

So, it did come in at Eastbourne!

Glad you guys had some activity and it looks like there’s still a fair bit going on in the Channel!  I don’t think we had anything this far inland, other than light rain.  If we did, I slept through it.

A complete bust for these parts but hey we definitely didn’t need the rain.

Looks like round 2 is brewing in the Channel - lots of lightning strikes and some intense echoes just off Dungeness (76-96mm/hour returns).

Local radio reporting 1000 lightning strikes in an hour at Eastbourne, some of which knocked out power supplies briefly.

No trace of this here at the far west of Sussex, though there's more storms brewing. Again heading for Eastbourne?

Looks like it all happened a little East of you and it seems to be moving further East with the brunt of the lightning currently along the Dutch coast.  For the sake of Lincolnshire, I hope it stays East!

The rain seems to be taking a more Easterly rout through the Straits of Dover as well, so Eastbourne should get some respite.

Morning Caz - I guess everyone near the River Steeping will echo that thought, as will everyone involved with the Lincolnshire Show. [Starts today.]
I confess to being a thunderstorm addict - they fascinate me - but I am prepared to forego that excitement for the sake of the flood victims! We once got caught up in an astounding thunderstorm when walking in the Sibillini mountains in Italy - spectacular but terrifying - no shelter - hailstones gathering on hats, the lot. Bit too much that - seriously dangerous.

So far it seems to be missing Lincolnshire!  So let’s hope the flood victims don’t get wetter and the show goes on without too much mud!  Lincoln is only a few miles East of me too!

I love a good TS too and my best was in the Florida Keys. We’d visited Key West to see the sunset and were driving back to Key Largo. It was night time but the lightning was constant and all around us as we drove over the seven mile bridge and lighting everything up, which was only the sea beneath us and miles of road ahead!  A bit scary but amazing and unforgettable!

I love a good thunderstorm but we too missed out on the last instalment. The last proper one with proper tropical rain was on the west coast of Palawan a few years back. Amazing experience. The scariest one was in the mountains in Palawan. Very dangerous lightning.

Frustrating to watch them move across the Channel and then miss us. We even missed the rain or most of it but 7mm I think.

I have more hope for something this weekend  after a dearth of storms for the past few years in this part of the UK.

They must be concerned to issue a warning this much in advance but given the expected heat over the near continent and the UK close to Low pressure probably a good call and one to watch as there could be some pretty severe storms around.

I was thinking the same and then I realised it’s Thursday already!  So it’s not actually that much in advance, about the same time frame as the warnings for last week and earlier this week.  Maybe they’re getting keener and erring on the side of caution!

For my area Peasedown St John N.E. Somerset, Monday and Tuesday will be the worst days for the thunder /lightning and heavy rain.

Some people walk in the rain.
Others just get wet.

Lots of interest over the coming days on the convective front, starting tomorrow evening with the potential for some storms overnight Sunday into Monday. MetO warnings should be updating this morning, but I'd hazard a guess that the main areas at risk will be E. Wales, S. Mids northward into N. England and S. Scotland later. Storms that do break out have the potential to be severe.

Just a quick word on the CAPE charts that are sometimes posted - remember the ones from the GFS cycle are SBCAPE - i.e. surface based CAPE. They won't necessarily pick up on CAPE amounts that may be present higher up that shows elevated instability where elevated convection can initiate. It's these kind of profiles we're looking at on Sunday night.

I have noticed though, that our previous yellow warning for thunderstorms has now been changed to just a yellow warning for rain with any thunderstorm warnings now just being restricted to down south. In addition to that, this warning now only covers Monday instead of starting on Sunday night as was the case beforehand.

Recent forecasts which I have seen have also suggested that this rain is likely to clear away from here quite quickly on Monday which means that this doesn't look like being such a big event in this part of the world after all.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Yep, looks like the potential in MetO's eyes is less than originally forecast. Some 6z models did reduce the risk, looks like they've agreed with that guidance.

Yes, our yellow warning has gone for Sunday and is currently just for Monday pm, although it could change again.

I noticed that, Caz - pity - I was looking forward to a good rattling.

Monday/Tuesday will have to do. Of course that could change too.
