Watched national and local forecasts on BBC this lunchtime and the snow warning extends up to the Central Belt. So the higher parts of Edinburgh may do well. Heaviest snow still in the Borders though

Wow, a wintry 14:57 forecast:

Mentioned the Amber warning for SE Scotland tonight, but snow possible for N Wales and NW/NE England and the N Midlands too.

Tomorrow snow possible for E England more for NE England, some possible further inland. Tomorrow evening more snow possible for E & SE England.

Friday snow showers for SW/NW England and N Wales.

Obviously most of the significant snow over high ground, but a much improved forecast.

Not the break down we were all waiting for but at least the dry and colder weather continues - it was due to break down by Monday:

Just watched the BBC weather for the week ahead by Alex Deakin

He said the low pressure fails to make it's way into the country! So looks like we won't see any breakdown of rain/sleet or snow like was forecasted for the SW!?

On the plus side it will be cold and crisp but I just hope it doesn't end with the high pressure sinking south and low sweeping around it bringing in freezing rain and then rain - I mean if temps really fall down to -10c to -15c it would be nice to have a proper breakdown would it not!?

He did say coldest spell since 2013. BUT perhaps the least snowiest!

Drat, I missed his forecast  A great result if he's dismissing the return of the Atlantic next week. He was stating quite the opposite last weekend. Quite a turnaround!

Hope we sneak a -20C somewhere

That's pretty much what I often felt like doing with my PC monitor almost every time I looked at the model output back in December, until Xmas Eve that is!

Will be quite a turnaround in the pattern of this winter should what is being forecast come to pass. Almost an early 1983 or Dec 1986-Jan 1987 style change should it verify with one very mild month being followed by something much colder.

Saying it's the coldest spell since 2013 may turn out to be valid but didn't Jan 2015 bring a cold spell? Storm Rachel was followed by colder weather and then a wintry theme persisted through into early Feb.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 19 Jan 2016 to Thursday 28 Jan 2016:

Settled conditions are expected to dominate at first with high pressure bringing generally dry, but cold conditions with widespread, and locally severe overnight frosts. The west is looking more unsettled, with rain from the Atlantic and some snow at times. As we move through next week, this rain is expected to push further east with a risk of snow as it meets the cold air. Eastern parts should be driest, but this brings the risk of further widespread frosts. The last week of January will probably see wet and windier weather becoming established across the north and west, with drier colder conditions in the southeast . Temperatures are expected to be below average at first, perhaps moving towards average by the end of next week, especially in the northwest.

UK Outlook for Friday 29 Jan 2016 to Friday 12 Feb 2016:

As we move from January into February northern areas are likely to see an unsettled period, with outbreaks of rain, strong winds, and some hill snow mixed with brighter, drier periods. Southern parts in contrast should see drier and more settled conditions, although rain cannot be ruled out. Overall temperatures are expected to be around normal, but possibly slightly below average in the south and east.

Im not even sure we got a frost from it.

Yes, unless there is a major turnaround in the models then this month is very unlikely to better the Jan 2015 cold spell at least down here.

After temperatures hit 14.5C on Jan 10 2015, there was then a run of quite severe frosts a week later (six air frosts out of eight days), peaking at -7.5C on Jan 23. The lowest max was 3.5C on Jan 21.

I'm not sure what models the Weather Channel-based iOS weather app uses (it doesn't seem to blindly follow GFS like some apps) but the outlook has trended a lot milder today. The temperature is up to 7C by Wed, then 10C on Friday and Saturday next week. All snow symbols in the meantime have also vanished....
