BBC monthly outlook

Monday 9 April—Sunday 15 April

Still wet for a time then turning more settled

An easterly wind flow will develop through the early part of next week and low pressure close to southern and western parts of the UK will produce areas of rain and drizzle. Many regions are likely to see further wet conditions at some stage and some of the rain will be heavy with the additional risk of lightning over SE England should warm, humid air over France fuel a few thunderstorms here. The easterly wind will be much less cold than recent easterly spells this year as this time the source of origin will be the eastern Mediterranean and eastern Europe rather than the Arctic.

The proximity of low pressure to the south could result in further rain to southern regions of the UK from middle part of next week on. Drier and calmer than usual conditions over more northern areas are expected as
high pressure over Scandinavia exerts enough influence to prevent any meaningful unsettled weather. Close to average temperatures for a time, then perhaps the chance of warmer conditions into the weekend.

Monday 16 April—Sunday 29 April

Settled for a time. Perhaps wet late April

Longer-range models indicate the continued migration of high pressure towards the UK during the middle of April. Although the exact pattern will very much be dependent on the orientation of that high, current indications suggest an easterly or perhaps south-easterly airflow continuing. Rather dry conditions are expected to predominate, with frontal systems expected to remain to the south-west of the UK by this point and then only weak features if they do make it to our shores. Temperatures are expected to remain around or slightly above average with any cool air from the north-east being offset by mild days.

As we look towards the end of April, there are some signs that high pressure will move away from the UK, allowing low pressure to become a more frequent visitor from the North Atlantic. Wetter and breezier conditions may return with a cooler feel to temperatures but there are some question marks over quite how unsettled it will be. Inevitably, the increasing strength of the sun may allow some heavy showers to develop too - a stark contrast to the drier weather expected through the middle of April.

Next Update

Will we see high pressure hanging on for longer than expected through late April?

UK Outlook for Saturday 14 Apr 2018 to Monday 23 Apr 2018:

Next weekend, any early fog will soon clear next Saturday morning, with bright or sunny spells developing for most. Showers are possible, and rain may move into the south and west, with drier conditions across central and southeastern areas. Into the working week, it is likely to become gradually more settled, with dry and probably sunny weather. There will be the chance of windier conditions in the west though, with some rain possible. It will be locally warm in central and southeastern areas, with a marked changed for the east and northeast, where it will be warmer than of late. Colder conditions may return to eastern coasts, but for many, temperatures are likely to be above average towards the end of the period, with a reduced chance of rain.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 24 Apr 2018 to Tuesday 8 May 2018:

Initially, it will probably be fine and dry, with sunny spells and a reduced chance of rain or showers. Temperatures are also likely to be above average for the time of year. Into late April and early May, conditions will probably become more unsettled with an increased chance of rain and strong winds, however details of where the unsettled conditions will be or how long they will last are currently very uncertain. Temperatures are also likely to return to close to average into early May, although marked variations in temperature from day to day are likely as Atlantic weather fronts move across the country.

UK Outlook for Sunday 15 Apr 2018 to Tuesday 24 Apr 2018:

A changeable picture looks likely at the start of the period with bands of showers moving east across the UK. There will also be drier periods with some sunshine. Eastern areas will benefit from the driest weather and temperatures here could be rather warm. Western areas will be wetter and windier with temperatures closer to normal. By mid-week it will probably become more widely settled with some dry and sunny weather. Western areas will, however be more likely to see some stronger winds and occasional showers. There is a chance that cooler conditions may return to eastern areas later in the week if an easterly wind develops. By next weekend generally fine and dry conditions are most likely to be in place with above-average temperatures.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 25 Apr 2018 to Wednesday 9 May 2018:

Conditions in late April and the start of May are likely to become unsettled with an increased chance of wet and windy weather, however signals are weak for how long such a spell may continue. While the confidence is low, the most likely scenario is for mixed conditions through early May, with perhaps some longer, drier periods but also a chance of cooler temperatures if a northerly flow becomes established.

*May*
Our current ideas are that the start of May is likely to be better than the end of the month.
Higher pressure may dominate at first bringing dry weather and good spells of sunshine. It is likely to be a milder start to the month, perhaps with an odd warm day.
Into the middle of the month outbreaks of rain and showers may encroach into western Ireland and southwest England.
Towards the end of the month conditions may become more unsettled, especially in the south and west with all places then wetter as the month ends.

*June*
The start of the month is likely to be unsettled with wind and rain.
Wet weather could last into the middle stages of the month when there will be strong winds and heavy periods of rain too. It may also be cool.
The second half of June is likely to be better with sunny sells and drier weather as well as being warmer.

Guess work based on the June monsoon. May happen. Likely to as it's a very common occurrence to have a wet and windy start to June.

Could be right. Last year, we had a dry first five months of the year with only February coming out drier than average. At that time, there was a lot of talk about a possible summer drought and hosepipe bans but then all of a sudden, we then had our wettest June on record which ended up being part of a wet summer overall, with every month during that summer being wetter than average (albeit with the other summer months not being as wet as June).

Another wet June during this year wouldn't exactly be welcomed in this part of the world given what the last few months have been like but then, everything has been in reverse this year with February being our only drier than average month during this year so far. That contrast has also been shown quite well during this month which has been a very wet month here overall, whereas last April was our driest April on record.

That would tend to go against June being such a wet month this year, especially since we are bound to get a run of drier months at some point in time as part of nature's means of balancing out this much wetter start to this year which we have had. At the moment, the long-term models look a bit undecided on that one and the analogues which I have been seeing in Gavin P.'s summer update videos haven't been looking good for the coming summer so far. Knowing my luck as well (particularly with the really bad luck which I'm experiencing during this spring so far), it would just be like the thing if we did get another wet June and wet summer, and it wouldn't surprise me one single bit if that was to end up happening.

I wouldn't take much notice of any long term weather outlooks. They are not much better than a pseudo-scientific guess in terms of the actual weather even if the synoptic trend is correct. Watch last Sunday's Countryfile weather and you'll see what can happen. Predicted the pattern correctly but because of the cloud amounts were completely out almost everyday with regards to sunshine and temperature, which after all is the weather, not the synoptic chart. Probably over estimated temperatures by 6- 8C every day here in Essex due to zero sunnshine. It seems that the prediction of snow and cloud amounts are something they have been unable to become more accurate with since the advent of super computers.
