If my memory serves me right, Storm Emma has being named under the system which is jointly operated by France, Spain and Portugal and which is separate from the system which jointly run by the UK and Ireland. That way, we at least don't have to worry about Met Eireann being so quick to name that weather system as Storm Hector, which is the next name in that list.

Correct they don't name a storm if someone else has already named it so in this case they'll use Storm Emma

I don't think I've seen them use that term before, it's usually something like "rain, sleet and snow" instead.

Can't help but being IMBY smug, latest BBC video forecast describing the NE amber warning area as 'wetter snow' and the SE amber warning area as 'powder snow'.  

At one point this was looking like it could be a 10 day affair. 

Then, for the south it became a 5-day affair

today was day one, which by your own admission didn’t really amount to very much. 

Day 4 and 5 are now in question on the models (if not unanimously answered). Yes they could be epic, but the evidence increasingly suggests not

So we’re possibly down to a 2 day event. Let’s hope not, but pretending we’re where we hoped to be just a few days ago is rather sticking your fingers in your ears and singing loudly to yourself to ignore the message. 

That said, let’s hope tomorrow delivers something. It could still happen. 

Headlines in tonight’s metro exhorting everyone “to get home by 6 tonight” make the point nicely, as my undelayed train home happily trundles home across an utterly snowless south London. There certainly has been too much hyperbole so far, but not from the sceptics. 

Yeah - the system is now appearing on the radar so we'll find out what will actually happen in the next few hours. 

And the automated forecasts seem to change with every update. They really are pointless.

Good post, the hyperbole on the tv news is just embarrassing nothing has  happened yet. Still 2 or 3 days of snow showers to come and maybe an event on Friday so we can't judge it yet . But it could be a massive let down which we don't deserve for the amount of bloody model watching we've all put in.

ECM 12z pretty good I must admit - we're trending slowly but surely in the right direction for some sort of messy continuation for cold temperatures. 

What we want is a nationwide snow event for Thurs/Fri with a battle win for the cold air then further shots at snow weekend and next week. Not too much to ask for in the grand scheme of things is it?

Both good posts. It's as if Donald Trump is writing the weather news! It may turn out to be a decent spell that they are cold ramping more than us! The Anglia presenter said todays temperatures were "way below zero and will be even lower tonight" !! They have cancelled trains "in case of" disruption. What is this Country becoming? I lost count of the "more on the way" quotes, they've hi-jacked our "Beast from the East" and trotted out the local councillor with three million gritter trucks because Essex is due to be the worst hit. That is contrary to the forecast that followed that clearly showed Kent being the worst affected. Crazy times. I do hope they are right because otherwise it will be big egg on face time for them.

Interesting to see an automated forecast low of -10C here tonight [from the MetO site]. That'd be the first time since 1987 if that were to happen.

The text forecast only mentions a low of -9C and, TBH, I wouldn't expect lower than -5C or so what with the wind. We'll see!

As for the weather here? Most of the populous areas of the UK have no snow lying. The thing has been completely overramped by the BBC, who should hang their heads in shame.

Personally, I don't just think that it is just the media who are to blame here (although I'm not suggesting in any way that they are completely blameless here) because at the end of the day, I have continually looked at a number of charts either on certain websites, or which have been posted on here by various forum members which have all pointed towards certain aspects of the overall model output which shows certain aspects which on the basis of how this winter has gone so far, can only really be described to being too good to be true.

The bottom line here, is that forecasts which are given out the media is then based on that model output and if that model output is showing things which are really good to be true, that is also going to come through on the various forecasts as well, so we cannot blame the media for that. What all of this is showing, is that the whole thing has been a hoax from the very start with that model output having been produced by various agencies who are surely being paid by certain aspects of the media (such as the Express) to produce such model output in order to assist them with producing those much over-hyped forecasts for which they are famous for.
