I wonder if it’s too early to be looking for the snow row count?*

https://wetterzentrale.de/maps/GFSP19EU12_126_2.png

It’s not quite there for

Shetland but not too far off.

*And yea I am joking but after a day of mid-teens it certainly feels a bit more like autumn than summer.

This year has been the textbook definition of a csb climate down here - as a reminder, that's the driest summer month with <40mm of rain, or 1/3rd the wettest winter month, with the hottest month having a mean of 22C or less. I've seen predictions of warming for later this century introducing areas of csb in the south (and losing the ET in the north), but that wasn't expected until 2050 or so...

Everything seems to have become speeded-up, so to speak, like things are moving in fast-forward!

(And the models continue to show negligible amounts of rain for the next fortnight down here. I've said before I feel we're stuck with this until something upstream, like an Atlantic hurricane, jolts the pattern eastwards... not much sign of that down here at the moment.)

How you mean cooler?  What i read in other thread it going to be build of HP and move east that give us heatwave 6.  App show 28C next week which mean low 30s here like yesterrday.

It's a fascinating article - almost mocking in tone with a bit of derision thrown in for good measure.

It shows just how much our climate, especially the South of the UK, has shifted in 30 years. Olives are very happy, Cannas don't need to be lifted over winter and we aren't far from Lemon trees over wintering outdoors in London. Certainly some of the hardier citrus trees now manage it.

I'd imagine that in about 20 years time Mandarins, pomegranates and the like will be a feature of many Urban gardens in the South.

AIFS has been the most keen on giving us a significant heatwave starting Saturday.  Ensembles look scorchio

Wetterzentrale have added county borders on their 2m temperature charts. Only problem you now can't see the temperature.  How does something like this happen? It's shockingly bad.

All this talk of heatwaves 🤔........looking at the big three this morning, our one chance of a heatwave shown yesterday on the GFS has gone! The Atlantic is waking up with Low Pressure and eventually cool northerlies moving in. As I mentioned the other day August is usually a poor month up here

FAX - current LP over Scotland soon moves off to Norway. Then two LPs approach from the Atlantic, blocked by HP near Denmark. On Sun 9th the HP has moved on to the Baltic States; the more active LP is 999mb Faeroes affecting Scotland with a front moving south to England, the less active LP is 1010mb central Spain, filling .

GFS Op 0z - In addition to the LPs on FAX, there is a following LP which moves to west of Ireland 1005mb Wed 12th and in combination with a rise of pressure over the North Sea brings hot air up from the south again for a couple of days. This LP shuffles around to the NW of Britain and then on Sun 16th crosses Scotland with cool N/NW-lies in its wake. By Fri 21st LP near Iceland  and HP Azores generate SW-lies for Britain. Little suggestion of rain for the south in all this.

ECM to T+240 - similar to GFS but keeps pressure higher to the southwest as that LP crosses Scotland on Sat 15th (last chart)

AIFS - London, maxima rise steadily to 33C Thu 13th and dry; then tumble to 17C Tue 18th with substantial rain. Edinburgh, maxima 16-18C to Tue 11th, then warmer at 23C for a couple of days all with occasional light rain; then again tumbling to 14C with heavy rain on Mon 17th.

GEFS - In England, cool at first, then a two stage heatwave, 5C above norm Sun 9th and 7C above norm Thu 13th (less in N England) before dropping to norm from Sun 16th. Rain increasingly likely from 16th onwards to Fri 21st. In Scotland, not so much a heatwave on those dates as peaks close to norm between cooler periods, heavy rain likely after 16th and smaller amounts occasionally before that.

The seesawing continues on the GFS, with 6Z going back to mid-30s heat next week. I'll be away eclipse-chasing, and glad to see that the models seem to have firmed up on a decent ridge over the Balearics in a week's time. Fingers crossed any storms stay out of the way!

Another ferociously hot AIFS 6z,  would likely make next week the hottest of the whole summer if it verified.

Seems the answer to the thread question is yes. The mean afternoon temperature across all the Ps on Wednesday next week is 33 across parts of S England, with very few options suggesting just warm and several going into the high 30s again.

Of course -5 doesn't equal snow on its own, but point taken: if the usual summer warmth has been bottled up somehow south of the jet (and reading Crepuscular Ray's threads it wouldn't surprise me), then like a displaced PV in winter, such incursions might be possible, although it's still a long sunshine day in the Arctic.

It’s a bit of an antidote for parts of the north as people talk of a fifth heatwave while we wait for a first one, and there’s no sign from the models that will change. For example the t850hPa 12z GEFS mean here is 1.3°C tomorrow. The north-south difference is stark and continues to be more significant than you would typically expect.
