Yes locally we had our 7th consecutive 30 today although today was only just. There has not been a summer like this for high temperatures, particularly if we think of the extended summer (May-September) with May being so extraordinary.

GEFS 12z rolling out is starting to echo what the BBC is saying- so from 18th, when it's all supposed to go cool, mean GEFS maxima in the south say 26,26,27,27,28,28,26.

No further yet- and just heatwave criteria in the S. Any other year we'd be heat-pleased or heat-cursing (depending on camp) but there is growing confidence of another week beyond next week of very warm, and maybe hot, weather.

And such fires do spread very quickly.

My memory goes back to 1948 (or maybe 1949) when we had gone to All Hallows* on the Thames estuary for a seaside jaunt, in the days when you went by excursion train instead of using up valuable petrol coupons. There was a sudden panic and the beach emptied with people walking rather quickly back to the station along the only track, which ran for several hundred yards through rough grassland. 

I was only small then, but I remember flames with yards of the track and as high as my parents and others walking there, and had developed, I think in less than half an hour.

After 12 days of July the average daily max has now hit 30.4c with our mean 1min at over 22c

Another 3.6 points today from Huron’s 32.6C. So we’re are 34.4 points. Still some way off the 2006 and 2003 benchmarks, and less than half way to 1976.

If hosepipe bans, desiccated lawns and stressed trees shedding leaves by the thousand is your definition of ‘unbelievable’ then I couldn’t agree more.  Then throw in overnight temperatures too hot for a decent night’s sleep.

Bah Humbug!  I hate the heat but at least you get to see plenty of flesh at the local park.

Yes and the many Wildfires breaking out with people being evacuated in places .

Grass growth has completely stopped in many areas,not just the south and I was speaking to a farmer in the Scottish Borders and the Springs are all drying up which is very challenging with a lot of stock on open hill.

Cooler with rain is desperately needed in many areas although in the North of Scotland they have had a lot of rain.

All I want at the end of the day is to be able to actually appreciate any spell of hot, dry and sunny weather which we get but it's just not possible to do that when those conditions become the actual norm as has been the case in recent years.

In the past, I can remember some really good classic summers such as 1976 but summers like that used to be a rare exception back in the day, rather than the actual norm.

This is shown by the fact that if you go back to before they rebuilt the roof on the Centre Court at Wimbledon, there used to be an almost annual tradition of rain delays at Wimbledon, and I'll never forget that period when Sir Cliff Richard would often entertain the crowds on Centre Court whilst it was absolutely chucking it down with rain.

That is a tradition that I really miss and just to show much things have changed since then, you're now probably more likely to get blazing heat with temperatures in the upper 30s°C at Wimbledon, than you are to get any issues with rain.

Even here in Scotland, we haven't had the exceptionally high temperatures which have been experienced down south and I don't want to either because even without that, I am absolutely sick to the back teeth of it being predominately dry and sunny for most of the time. I'm not saying for one minute that I actually want it to be cool and wet but for me, the fact that the last couple of months were actually slightly duller than average here at least gave us a bit of a break from every month in spring and summer being sunnier than average all the time.

With this latest spell of weather though, I believe that normal service is being resumed once again with the return to the usual sunnier than average conditions which to be honest, has just become really boring now. In fact, it's even got to the point where I no longer have all that much interest in the weather in general because of that (that is already being shown by the fact that I no longer see any value in collecting the rainfall totals because I already know that these will be below average).

To to me, is a good reason why we desperately need just a spell of cooler and wetter weather, but an actual cooler and wetter than average month or season or better still a good run  of cooler and wetter months or seasons. That won't be nice to experienced and because people are usually very short-sighted, a lot of people on here will probably moan quite a lot about that whilst it's happening but at the end of the day, that would at least help me to appreciate a decent spell of hot and sunny weather when we get it, rather than just taking that for granted as being just the actual norm for here.

At the same time, that would also at least make everything a bit more interesting again which would probably rekindle my general interest in the weather once again, thereby resulting in me actually wanting to record rainfall totals again and seeing an actual purpose for doing so.

7th August 2003 revisited. Very late max, temps still 22C under clear skies at midday. 

It's warming rapidly here now. I'll not get to 30C, but somewhere official could still do it. 

Looks like there is a lot of cloud approaching the south coast now though.

Not sure we'll hit 30c though, my guess is still a no, prob high 28c.

Despite the gusty breeze it's now a little over 29C so I'd say 30C is a certainty now somewhere along the Solent coast.
