An utterly bonkers summer so far, and we're not even halfway through it! And I'm really pleased to see one of those obscure little villages get that 6th 35C, too. That, combined with the numerous ways it's beaten 1976 in terms of high temperatures, if not outright duration (yet), will hopefully put an end to the 76-ers and their "it's just summer, we've had it all before" rhetoric.

Today we now have 35C or more recorded in 3 consecutive months. Amazing one of those in May. We could easily get another in August and even September.  Easily possible now. Suppose we see 32C in the beginning of October. Easily possible these days. That would be 32C or more in 6 consecutive months.

I wouldn't rule it out. 🙂🙂🙂🙃

14 date records (no idea if that's a record in itself!)

What stands out is the sheer number. In a largely even, unchanging climate the number of date records broken should decrease over time. The fact that so many are being broken is indicative of how fast the climate is changing. It would make a fascinating graph.

In any case, today is the 180th day of the year and we have had 14 date records, so 1 day in every 13 has been the hottest of that date ever!

If anyone is interested in our members up north, Edinburgh only made 23 C today so no heatwave.....the wait goes on.

Even though today hasn't been as hot as other recent days, it has still been very dry and with those tinder-dry conditions, that only increases the risks of wildfires breaking out such as the one in that report. With ongoing climate change as well, that is sadly something which is just going to get worse over time.

Although that isn't something which has happened in my area, I'm also equally interested in that because at the end of the day, this is still something else which is happening in Edinburgh, the very city where I live. There was a major fire just yesterday in the city centre which was bad enough as it is, so the last thing Edinburgh needs just now is anything like this in addition to that.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Thanks for pointing that out John, not far from me at all. We will have to get used to more of these wildfires

I’m driving down the A303 to Devon tomorrow, stopping in Somerset for lunch. Will keep a beady eye on the car thermometer.

Heatwave score update: assuming the Wisley reading is the final one, we’re at 13.8 + 6.6 = 20.4

Reminder that the ones in our sights are July 2006 and August 2003, both with scores in the 40s. June/July 1976 remains way out in front for now.
