On your scale, we have already had a heatwave in May scoring 16.5 and another in June scoring 32.2 before this one...

Mean max 23, mean min just 14.5! And there were days in the teens, one solitary 18 overnight and plenty of 11s and 12s. It maxed out at 29.0 that month.

Meanwhile this past week it's already reached 30 twice (Monday and Tuesday), peaked at 31.4 and had an absolute low of 14.2.

Try and tell people that though and you just get shot down instantly!

Max temps here so far in July, 19, 19, 23, 23, 19, 20, 20, 29!

30C out to the 19th on the 12Z GFS so not quite such a long duration as yesterday but still 15 days.

BTW Liam Dutton tweeted to confirm 33.8C at Wisley the max today. So just 0.3C short of the 1941 date record. Tomorrow's looks certain to go, it's a mere 32.7C.

The maximum was 29.1C in my garden, and 29.0C at the Met Office station 2 miles down the road, so the Davis VP2 screen worked a treat, and that's without a fan.

Yesterday's Met Office regional text forecast for Grampian region was going for a max of 23C today, when even the raw data for Aboyne was giving 26C. Really poor for a human generated forecast from an official source - seems to be given to the most junior forecaster to write and not checked as there are often typos.

After today’s 33.8C at Wisley our heatwave score is now 9.5.

EDIT: I can’t count. I missed out Monday. It’s now 13.8, not 9.5

I can join in here today. Edinburgh touched 27 C today, it's suddenly summer after an autumnal feeling 10 days. It's still 21 C at 2200!

It looks like tomorrow may reach 25 C + but then Friday will see an easterly drift and by Saturday the haar will extend it's evil influence into the city, wiping out the heatwave chance once more!

Meanwhile this forecast caught my eye - the MetO raw for Exeter. It must be very unusual down there to get a solid week in the 30s, I'd have thought?

A second peak in the heat is showing up on this morning's GFS for next week now (and it's not the warmest run in the pack by any means).

Maxima from today: 35, 36, 34, 33, 33, 35, 35, 35, before a thundery looking breakdown next Friday (but still high 20s until the following Wednesday)

Today (July 9) 50 years ago was the last day of the record-breaking 18-day 1976 heatwave. After that, 1976 only recorded four more days above 30C for the rest of the year.

Ridiculously hot for so early in the day! 27.7, dew 19.5. Only another 8 hours of heating to go... but hopefully, maybe, a sea breeze will kick in later.

Already 29.1c at Wisley,  feels like a 35c day today. Would be the 5th 35c day of the year.

Also 20th 30c day, likely will have 25 30c days before half way through summer.

The main ones surround our holiday in Devon. We had family friends living down there and we stayed with them that year. They had this big 1960's bungalow in the middle of a big wood near Budleigh Salterton. I remember all the gras being scorched (we still have photos). One day we went to a reservoir (later pinpointed it as Squabmoor) and the water was really low. Assumed that wasn't unnatural till we went again the following year and it looked very different!

When you're that age, everything seems to take forever and the days go really slowly (oh, how I miss that!!) but I still remember it being sunny and warm or hot for week after week after week.
