It is perfectly clear here now and does feel more like a proper heatwave, 32.4C at Blackbushe which tends to be a coolish station. 33 at Farnborough and 33.4 at Reading at 3pm. If the high-res models are correct we can add about 4 degrees to that tomorrow.

WOW site has quite a few 36s and even 37s around the Reading/west London area now. 4pm update might be interesting.

The temperature peaked at 29.7°C here, at just before 14:00. That's 2°C down on what was forecasted for today (32°C). It looks like a bit of a sea breeze has picked up, as the wind has shifted around to the west and the temperature has dropped to 27.8°C.

Temperatures are creeping up towards the June record as multiple regions across the UK have hit 34C.

I think the revised temp forecasts and regional variations show how perfect things need to be aligned for extreme heat in the UK compared to say France.  We are surrounded by cold seas and if a slight modification = big changes, especially further North.   2022 was incredible and perfect in that regard, but even so temps in the South peaked early and then in the East a bit later, around here temps dropped  5-8c around 4pm, with no front but wind changing more off the Irish sea.

Well made comment. Check out 27th and 28th June 2019. We had 850s well above 20 for a time but the N Sea was cold and it impacted the temperatures significantly. It did heat up for a day on 29th with a 30+ CET but the 27th and 28th were in the low 20s- the afternoon 850s were higher than the surface temps at one point I believe.

34.5C at Wisley now. Might just crack 35C but I think the June record is a bridge too far still. RAF Fairford also 34.5C although I don't think that is official..

The Met Office posted just half an hour ago predicting 38/39/37 for Wed to Friday. The error bar for Thursday appears to go from 37 to 41 but I don't know how scientific this graphic is!

(Edit: the trajectory of the 2022 airmass, around 10 minutes in, is fascinating too, the high-level air came from Africa, the low-level air from near Greenland. And *that's* apparently why it dried out as it did. This time the upper air is still coming from Africa but the low-level stuff is from near the Azores, hence much more humidity.)

Here in Edinburgh, the temperature appears to have peaked just short of the June record for here but we have come very close to that record and for that reason, I will keep keeping a close eye on the 18z raw SYNOP/BUFR data which will confirm the actual maximum temperature for today as that could yet result in the June record for here being broken.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Met office now forecasting 35c Thursday for Carlisle, imo, the Scottish temp record is very likely to fall Thursday around 4pm somewhere around the current record holding location near Kelso or the official record at holder RAF Chaterhall. Or even Gretna Annan area!

The MetO are going for 38 as a high tomorrow, and some unusual language in the text forecast! Normally the only time they mention disruption is due to severe winds or snow...

Wednesday:

A very hot, humid and widely sunny day, with the potential for these temperatures to cause significant disruption. Staying warm and muggy overnight. Maximum temperature 38 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Very hot and sunny again Thursday, likely slightly hotter than Wednesday. Hot again Friday with long sunny periods, though thundery showers may develop. Perhaps turning cooler with showers Saturday.

The MetO raw still has 37C for Friday here, which would be exceptional. I would expect the amber to be extended into Friday, or a new warning for the SE and east were it to stay that way!

criticism of the Met Office and the red danger level warnings are way off the mark IMHO.... If you work in a hospital, anything that encourages people not to carry on with their usual level of activity and travel/commute etc etc  over the new few days and work from home and thereby reduce pressure on hospital admissions has to be welcomed... And yet GB news still spout the usual garbage about the met office gone woke and it's hot out there so what.... sort of stuff... Of course some people do have to travel to keep the economy and public services going but it's ludicrous to pillory the Met Office...

My last post from Jersey today - we hit 37.2c, a June record for us (British Isles as well even if we don’t count any more), second highest ever recorded here, with 37,38 forecast for the next two days.  Off for a swim now

Saturday is increasingly looking like another mid-30s day now. Could be five days in a row above 34C.

Even Sunday is nudging towards 30C on the GFS now.

Just got my highest temp of the day at the vineyard, which is highly unusual as it usually peaks early there (East facing). 31.9C Vs only 27 yesterday.
