Matt just now on Breakfast had ample opportunity with a nod to later next week with a story on the huge snow in Eastern Russia. He linked it with ‘No snow here’ quote.

Not a good sign if it’s positive hints you’re after.

Scrolled through it yesterday, absolutely awful, leave a review on the App Store. It’s an app I won’t be using anymore.

Edit… there is a feedback page in the app for your opinions.

I actually don't mind the general look and feel and how you can navigate across to later in the day or other day details.

Two main points for me:

1. Weather warning list option needs to be more prominent

2. What's happened to the text forecast - both 5 days and beyond?

I guess overall we'll get used to it and hopefully they will take feedback into account.

Update from Met O at 2pm today:

23 Jan - 1 Feb Throughout this period, the UK will see a battle between Atlantic weather systems attempting to push in from the west while high pressure and colder, drier conditions attempt to exert some influence from the east. Initially, milder Atlantic air is expected to dominate for most parts, with showers or longer spells of rain. Temperatures are likely to be around or a little above average, except in the far northeast where it is likely to be colder with some sleet or snow. There is then an increased chance that conditions will turn more widely colder and drier. This aspect of the forecast is still somewhat uncertain but the potential transition to colder weather also increases the chance of snow across parts of the country.

I think this New Scientist piece might fit in here. 14th January

"“Governments need to agree on a planetary solvency plan quickly,” says David King, former top climate adviser to the UK government who contributed to the report. “We are looking at an accelerated rate of temperature rise. We’re not sure if that will continue into the future but we can probably assume it’s not going to relax backwards.”

A first step towards such a plan could be to stop assuming the world economy will keep expanding, says Sandy Trust at the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK, an author of the new report. According to the Network for Greening the Financial System, global GDP could fall by 25 per cent with 2°C of warming by 2050. This would mean up to $25 trillion in economic losses annually due to climate-related impacts, says Trust. But the network says it doesn’t foresee a recession, since it expects global economic growth to outpace those damages."...

But the biggest reason we could surpass 1.5°C sooner than expected is because emissions have continued to increase each year, says Samantha Burgess at Copernicus. Fossil fuel emissions set yet another record in 2025.

“Emissions haven’t come down as fast as people believed they would,” says Burgess.

Every tenth of a degree of warming will result in more frequent and intense extreme weather. Already, the Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025 – potentially the costliest natural disaster in US history – were twice as likely and 25 times larger due to climate change. Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm to make landfall around the Atlantic Ocean, was associated with wind speeds at least 16 kilometres per hour faster than would be expected without climate change.

Sooner-than-expected climate impacts could cost the world trillions

A report warns that we may have seriously underestimated the rate of warming, which could damage economic growth

Am beginning to get annoyed with the BBC forecasts, continuously stating that temps down here at 11c are about average for this time of year, that is not the case and far above average.

Latest Deep Dive from Alex Deakin of the MetO, dated 20th   Jan

Some rough times ahead for NE Scotland this week , gales, snowfall pretty certain on the Hills with the worst of it in a band South of the Great Glen, heavy cold rain along the coast. (11 minutes); then the final panels (after 22 mins) with percentages assigned to widely different outcomes.

The MetO app has had a revamp. If this is the final version, it’s even more crap (all weather apps are, due to being raw data at any one point in time) than it was before, because at least the old version had the text short and long range forecasts. The new version doesn’t. I don’t know whether the plan is to integrate this at some stage. Not sure why it can’t happen from now. Hardly seems a technological stretch in 2026

Was just looking at the winter storm forecast for the US this weekend, and wondering how some of the weather being forecast is even possible. Nashville for example is set to get hail and sleet on Saturday and Sunday with max temps of -4 to -6C. This doesn't sound right at all, surely at those temps it couldn't be anything other than snow?!

I'm slightly surprised to see Chandra leading the news on both BBC and Sky this afternoon. That said, I'm guessing the most severe impact is the flooding.

Met Office press release about OS47 here:

The Met Office has launched its most significant scientific upgrade in more than three years, a major step forward for the UK’s weather and climate science capability.

The new science delivers clearer, more accurate and more intuitive forecasts, bringing them closer than ever to real-world weather.

The upgrade marks a major step forward in the UK’s weather and climate science capability delivering tangible improvements that will make forecasts easier to interpret. Forecasts will now more accurately show rain and snow in a way that more closely reflects real-world‑ conditions.

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/news-and-media/media-centre/weather-and-climate-news/2026/major-upgrade-to-met-officce-forecasting-system

The upgrade went live in late January. On TWO the UKV, UK Met Global and MOGREPS-G feeds automatically switched to it, and that will be the same for other websites / apps.

I've not seen any reports, but snowfall in the western Alps in recent days could be approaching record levels. This is at 1,650m in Courchevel. The piles of snow on the left and right (on a south facing roof so they quickly melt) have fallen entirely in the last few days.

There seems to be a trend this winter of the very moment the MetO produce a deep dive about snow, the models start rowing back on it with a vengeance 🤣🤣

This isn't a MetO bash btw, aside from their deeply irritating 'heavy spells of rain' thing (is it the spells that are heavy or the rain???), I prefer their forecasts to the Beeb but this winter does seem to have been one of LPs deepening a touch more than expected and tracking further north as a result. Insignificant globally, somewhat more relevant for little old Blighty.

I think that's a first - the MetO text forecast for the SE bends their rules to breaking point and mentions warm weather - in winter! In theory they should say "exceptionally mild", but clearly they wanted to go beyond that given the MetO raw is showing 16C widely.

"Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Early fog clearing, then dry and very mild with warm sunny spells Wednesday."

'Misleading weather apps cost attractions thousands'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czj18j09wvro

Major UK tourist attractions including Chester and Edinburgh Zoo are calling for changes to the way weather forecasts are displayed on mobile phone apps - warning that "misleading" rain icons cost venues up to £137,000 a day.

The radio report on this suggested that the Great British Public are either too thick or too lazy to look at more than one icon for the day.
