Surprised no comments on the widespread floods across Asia.  Hundreds killed in many different countries  Imagine the media coverage if it was America.

Interesting weather in Crete through the next day or so. My mum who has lived on the island for the best part of 25 years has received a government alert of extreme thunderstorms and severe gales throughout Friday and going into the weekend.

That’s the first one she can recall getting. I could hear the thunder in the background whilst on the phone.

While the UK might finally get a cooler than average Christmas Day, large parts of the US will be more than 20ºC warmer than average!

In contrast it looks like there’s some pretty cold conditions locked up in more northern parts with Faro in Yukon currently at -51°C and a forecast max of -48°C today.

For reference the “normal” value for this time of year is a max of -17°C.

I stayed in Seyðisfjörður years ago and kept in touch for many years with the English teacher and his family.

I can remember someone in Reykjavík saying these synoptic situations led to winter high temps, not so much in Reykjavik but in the mountainous part valleys.  A Foehn effect. But it has been chilly in the north of the island recently.

Not so much unusual as a hopeful marker for the next month or two: New York has just had its heaviest snowfall for 4 years (24") after most of the US had a record warm Christmas.

Some concerning heat potential for parts of South Australia, Victoria and into New South Wales towards the end of this week. 850 HPa temperatures have on some recent model runs been around 30c. The strength of the sun and likely clear skies may allow temperatures into the high 40’s, and with the potential for gusty winds these are exceptional conditions. If the models runs continue with these conditions catastrophic fire danger seems likely.

Of interest an unusually intense inversion developed across parts of Melbourne this morning. At 2:30am under clear skies and an inversion the temperature was 18.5c. By 4.03am a high altitude thunderstorm had broken the inversion with gusty winds and the temperature jumped to 36.2c. The storm cleared through and clear skies and an inversion redeveloped with temperatures back down to 17.9c by 5:24am.

Not solely weather-related, but I did chuckle at the 'Stranger Things'-esque pink sky over Birmingham last night.

Caused by a combination of special pink lighting to help keep the Birmingham City FC football pitch healthy coupled with the reflective capacity of the snow-laden sky and mist

My sister in law left her property in Mount Macedon last night, with the air thick with smoke, mostly down to the fact that there were so many trees coming down locally as opposed to any local fires, but it's a heavily wooded mountain and the fires are so quick to spread once they start. Other friends in the Yarra Valley winery area were awake from 2am due to the huge amount of dry lightning strikes in the area.

As much as any fire is dangerous and size is obviously not the be all of it, the two major fires currently still burning are 145 and 100 thousand hectares in size respectively... the largest has a 180km edge and obviously when the change of wind direction hits that all sweeps forward towards anything in its way.

Following on from the fires in Victoria, which are still burning and totaling about a quarter the size of Wales now, there has been some very localised flash flooding on the Great Ocean Road near the town of Lorne. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01-16/flooding-great-ocean-road-victoria-wye-river-lorne/106232918

Looking at The Age website I use, which is behind a paywall, they received 53mm in 30 mins and over 150-180mm in 5 hours. What was more extraordinary was that 30km down the road had about 20mm, Melbourne about an hour's drive away had 0mm.

Not too much happening here in the Netherlands, as expected being only 55 minutes flying time away it's more or less UK-like. We did have a solid 15cm snowpack here in Gouda up until Monday morning, then the Atlantic got to work!
