Agreed with you as last time I see real storms, i mean real ones in between SUN that we don't get anymore here, all the time cloudy and boring rain showers, was in Chicago in 2014 and I was really enjoyed watching the storms with huge interest.  I used to do that in here before in the 80's and 90's storms when I see sunshine then black clouds roll in, no longer exist.

Just out of interest, thunderstorms also occur on Jupiter and Saturn (these might interest Matty), and there's evidence of lightning on Uranus and Neptune. Thunderstorms doubtfully exists on Venus.

Anyway, back to Earth.

The storms of July 1968 were spectacular and severe ending a shortlived heatwave which most were in the 60s . Sept same year also brought dramatic storms and a lot of rain . Seen plenty of impressive displays of lightning fron the South over the years living on the Sussex coast including the last ten altho they seem less common now than in the past . I think the storms of July 1923 held some records for lightning too

For me, 16 years old at the time and in Orpington only a few miles from Knockholt, the most distinctive feature was the reversal of gale force winds from SE to NW with a calm patch of blue sky in between - a hurricane feature in miniature

I remember this spectacular storm from my childhood as well

I had spent the day at Keston Ponds fishing with my pals that day (at a time when primary school kids were allowed out on their own to do such things) and lived in Bromley at the time

What sticks in my mind is the frequency of lightning flashes (almost continuous) and the intensity of the rain. I seem to recall it lasting about 1 1/2 hours between about 8 and 10 pm

Nowhere near as serious as the storm in the same area of September 1968 in terms of rainfall totals and flooding but much more intense

The Met Office 1km square rainfall map shows the event reasonably well but understates the very high rainfall totals (130mm) in the very centre of the storm. Where these huge totals occur in a very small aresa (0,5 sq miles in this case) then even the averaging of 1 sq km tends to smooth out the readings a bit too much. Also happened in the Hampstead storm of Sept 1975 and the Bruton storm of 1917 which I also used the 1km daily rainfall data to document

Anyway this is the map based on these overlayed with the map of the NW kent area affected (clickable)

Heavy shower with one rumble just passed through. Looks as if there might be a repeat performance in an hour or two.

From Sky News:-

Temperatures dropped on Saturday and the Met Office warned storms could rumble over the southwest and into southern England on Saturday afternoon until 7pm.

Forecasters are predicting heavy rainfall but fear the rapid pace of the lightning is "more likely to be a hazard," with the most frequent strikes expected in parts of Cornwall and Devon.

Crikey - is it going above the speed of light then?

There have been a few rumbles & flashes, but nothing spectacular and all quite distant out at sea.

Yup, over an hour all told of frequent (as in every 3-4 seconds at some points) lightning, plus 16mm of rain - peaking at over 100mm/hour rainfall rate just before midnight. It was pretty impressive, but boy do I feel tired this morning!

It looks like it's having another go this morning coming up from the south. Last nights activity looked impressive on the radar but somehow managed to miss us leaving a trace of rain and no puddles.  The forecast today is for light rain showers and moderate breeze.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it split again at Portland with one boisterous part to the west and other noisy one to the east with a sunny gap in the middle passing overhead.

We had a thunderstorm between 00.05 and 00.35. A 5/10 rating storm for me.

Just 3.6mm of rain but the storm did pass overhead with two or three notable crashes and bangs.

Not a bad start to the summer 2022 Storm Season.

A 3/10 event occurred at 1am on 19th May and the other a 4/10 event occurred at 11pm on 4th June.

Managed to miss us as well yesterday . On the radar a line up from Beaminster Blandforc and over towards Romsey missed the lot . Any that did fall was whipped away by a very gusty wind.

Yeah, have experienced far worse although it was pretty windy for a time. Still, the 5.0 mm of rain is enough to magically revive my parched-looking lawn.   I couldn't type anything at the time as my broadband had stopped working, seem to get like that every time there is lightning - an issue I've never experienced before.

Yes, biggest storm for some time in S.Essex in terms of thunder and lightning. On the edge of it a bit here with it mostly going around us but one downpour gave a useful 5mm. Across the Estuary in mid Kent and out towards Darren got the brunt of it.
