More on Tonga....
"Scientists have described a massive "magma hammer" they say slammed the underside of the Tonga volcano which erupted so spectacularly in January."

A series of pretty significant pyroclastic flows at mount Merapi in Indonesia today. Some of the footage I've come across is pretty epic

This article in New Scientist: with interesting clip.
"The Shiveluch volcano, one of Russia’s most active, has erupted, ejecting a huge cloud of ash that has coated nearby villages and triggered aviation warnings.  The volcano, which is in the country’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, began erupting just after midnight on 11 April, launching a huge cloud of smoke and ash into the sky, according to Russian authorities. Its last major eruption was in 2007. Up to 8.5 centimetres of volcanic ash have settled in the village of Klyuchi, according to news reports."

I cached this week image from Twitter yesterday, Roger, and I'll post it here as I did not see it included in that particular article. Sat image of ash plume.

By any measure, this was a powerful eruption. Seems to have a Mt saint Helens quality about it

Research on the Tonga eruption last year.... Grauniad.
"Scientists have used eye and earwitnesses accounts, along with data from tide gauges, satellites, evidence of broken windows and other sources, to calculate that the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano, which occurred on 15 January 2022 and was felt around the world, likely involved five blasts. The last of them released energy equivalent to about 15 megatonnes of TNT."

Katla has been grumbling a fair bit lately with the latest swarm overnight having close to 100 earthquakes. Probably nothing will happen but after another earlier swarm this week the Iceland Met did say quakes were above normal.

Last night 8 quakes above M3 with the largest being M4.4.

Not much has come of the katla unrest but looking likely another eruption is imminent on the Reykjavik peninsula.

Yes the IMO has stated there is the increased likelihood of an eruption. It will be interesting to see if and where it occurs.

The bulk of the current activity appears to be in a similar location to the last eruption: https://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/reykjanespeninsula/#view=map

I think given it had erupted twice in this area over the couple of years the likelihood is quite high. Any eruption will probably be small like the previous events, but none the less great for Icelandic tourism.

The 'magma intrusion', from the bits and pieces I have picked up anyway, is supposedly on par with the pre-2021 eruption in terms of volume, which is no guarantee that an similar sized eruption will be the result, but interesting times for sure. It seems something of a 'cycle' is going on.

That was only a small eruption.

I am aware, but in theory at least, any potential eruption could last at least as long as the 2021 event. Speculation suggests that any eruption would likely occur more to the north of the previous two, but that remains to be seen.
