I see the model struggles continue

My usual first check of the ECM ens suggested an improvement from Boxing Day onwards IMBY, with a better cold grouping and the cold cluster arguably being the majority for 3-4 days. The mean tends to back this up with it being as low as I've seen it.

The ECM Op is one of those 'what do you expect when you're so far south' kind of runs - good for areas not too far North of me, chilly and damp IMBY.

I didn't see the GFS 00z ens but 6z set suggest (as has been apparent for a few days I guess) game on for areas North, very uncertain for further south with the boundary line between cold/chilly/mild still TBC. That boundary could be very snowy for a time but below the line the cold or less cold rain is unlikely to be as appealing

In terms of the Xmas period T2M temps (again IMBY) bit of a difference ECM and GFS, the former has 2 main clusters, chilly or mild, with the Op sitting somewhere between the two. Mild looks more likely than chilly. GFS ens rather more confident it'll be mild until circa 27th/28th when chilly or cold becomes more likely.

All in all I think the general setup is looking good this morning but still very uncertain for the far south and 'messy' for others a bit further North. For Scotland and maybe Northern England a fairly lengthy spell of cold weather with some snow opportunities is looking like the favoured option. I guess the nice thing is it's looking very likely we'll get Northern blocking, just need the jet to play ball so the LPs interact favourably with the cold air flooding south west.

Right, its time to hanker down for the 12's.

Everything just that bit further north on the ICON 12th. Increasingly, it looks as if the bulk of the GFS runs over the last few days have been the most consistent regarding the pushing of the Atlantic in just that little bit further.

GFS 12z has the low further south, further east and a different shape than in the 6z, could be far more interesting for cold as colder air to the north gate wrapped in quicker. Cmon GFS, I’m on tenderhooks here!

on Boxing Day it’s become a channel low 😍

UKMO looks good for Xmas Eve. 168 hour chart not out yet on TWO.

GFS doesn't quite get the cold air in so it's rain for virtually all of the south on this run. May be better later in the run though.

Fine margins for the south on GFS op run - wrong side this time with DPs too high and temps a little high cold rain easterly which was a theme last Jan. could turn better later in the run with cold not to far away

It appears (for now) that we have reached a consistent pattern for the period 24-26th December. Cold in the north ever slowly edging southwards.

GFS 12z looks very good for cold weather fans. It doesn't get much better than this really.

UK Met 12z 168 is sensational.

Also goes to show the 850hpa temp is not the be all and end all when it comes to cold spell severity.

I believe the shallower the Norwegian shortwave the more robust the CAA that can get into the UK 24th on. This feature is becoming less influential with each run. In fact if it didn’t exist at all we’d be looking at a very decent spell indeed. As it is there are factors at play that need to click into place but it’s looking pretty good so far.

Difficult to pick fault apart from would be nice to be in time for all on 25th. Pretty special charts all round

GFS despite looking pretty is virtually snowless for the southern half of the country (I know ppn charts aren't much use).

Very different in the latter stages with a monster LP about to blow everything away from the west.

GFS 12z quite good post Xmas. The cold developing to our East looks impressive, can't remember the last time there was such intense cold being modelled out East this early in the season.

End of GFS like flashback of a couple of days ago for Xmas day...disregarding that ...a stagnant Baltic style high over UK   will be very hard to shift....Great snowstorm of Jan 82 could be replicated a few times with this Airmass...
