Not according to https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2021/09/sam-rapidly-intensifies-into-a-hurricane/ (scroll down to last para)

Normally if a TS like Odette leaves remnants which revive as a zombie storm, the name is retained.

Rapid intensification for both Sam (only just short of cat 5) in Atlantic probably a near miss for Bermuda, and also for Mindulle in Pacific (cat 5, probably a near miss for Japan) Five cat 5s this year so far

Super Typhoon Mindulle in the Northwest Pacific
(165 mph winds, 920 mb central pressure, September 26);
Super Typhoon Chanthu in the Northwest Pacific near the Philippines
(180 mph winds, 905 mb central pressure, September 10);
Super Typhoon Surigae in the Northwest Pacific near the Philippines
(190 mph winds, 895 mb central pressure, April 17);
Tropical Cyclone Faraji in the southwest Indian Ocean
(160 mph winds, 925 mb central pressure, February 8); and
Tropical Cyclone Niran in the South Pacific Ocean
(160 mph winds, 931 mb central pressure, March 5).

Thanks for that, seems they were distinct systems rather than a situation where the ex tropical storm had merged with another system and it was debatable if it was the same storm system.

Not noticed any Medicanes this year so far unlike 2020 (but correct me if I'm wrong).

Cyclone Shaheen was on track Saturday to become the first tropical cyclone in modern recordkeeping to strike the northern coast of Oman, perhaps even moving into the United Arab Emirates before it dissipates.

It originated in India as cyclone Gulab and has been renamed.

I’m keeping a close eye on this thread and hoping the hurricane season doesn’t extend this year.  We’ll be cruising round the med from 26th, then from Cape Verde on 3rd November, crossing the Atlantic to Antigua, then cruising around the Caribbean.  I want calm seas!  I was in Cape Verde the August hurricane Irma started there and struck the Caribbean, so I’m thinking we’ll be sailing a hurricane route!

Sounds very exciting! I am jealous of you. Enjoy the cruise and I hope the hurricanes steer clear of you

 We’re retired and spending our kids’ inheritance!  I’ll let you know how it goes.  My brother was in the Dominican Republic during hurricane Irma, confined to the hotel room for three days.  I was worried for him at the time but he survived unscathed and now I’m jealous of his hurricane experience but I wouldn’t want to encounter one.

We flew home from Cape Verde as Irma was gathering there.  There was no extreme weather on the ground but we had to take off with less fuel due to wind shear and re-fuel in the Canary Isles, which was an experience.

Good luck with the voyage. Mr brother did the Arc years ago singlehanded. https://www.worldcruising.com/arc/event.aspx

Quite an adventure in a boat he built himself 28ft long and ferrocement. No hurricanes that year.

A couple of possible disturbances approaching the Caribbean islands, worth watching, Caz.

Meanwhile all the atmospheric energy seems to be concentrated on the Plains with extensive and prolonged tornado swarms

 Thanks for the update DEW.  Hopefully it will have quietened down by the time we get that far.  Our original booking was for two weeks later and a little clearer of hurricane season, but the dates were changed due to covid.

Our itinerary has changed again, omitting Cape Verde, adding Malaga and Cadiz, then crossing the Atlantic from The Canary Islands.  That suits me as I’ve been to Cape Verde a few times but never to mainland Spain.
